Akizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - - - JULY 13, 1S7S. For Congress. Judge Porter was suddenly call ed to Los Angeles by the serious illness of his wife, who is now re covering. On his return, we hope to be permitted to publish the an nouncement ot his candidacy for Congress. In that case the strug gle will be entirely between him and Mr. Stevens; the other candi dates don't count for much just now, and no change seems likely to occur, that will give either of them much prominence. It seems to be generally admitted, through out the Territory, that Judge Por ter possesses, in a greater degree than any of the other candidates, the necessary qualifications for the position of Delegate to Congress; that in itself is about half the bat tle. The Miner newspaper and some individuals, have taken the liberty of declaring that George Tyngand The Sentinel would support Hon. A. E. Davis, in case of his becoming a candidate. This has probably arisen from the fact that we have always spoken of Mr. Da...

1 Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - - JULY 20, 1878. Yuma County 1'oliticH. While in every other county of Arizona the papers are loaded with announcements of candi dacy, here, in Yuma County, no one has yet published or declared his intention to seek local oflice. The reasons for this are: That none of the County offices pay enough to properly support a man qualified to fill them; and that office-holders here have been sub jected to so much hostile criticism and slander, that self-respect has impelled them to resign, and makes other good citizens unwill ing to expose themselves to the same annoyances by filling the vacancies. Every vacancy has been filled by persuasion and strong appeals to sense of public duty. But oue Supervisor was chosen at the last election, there being a tie-vote. Six vacancies have been filled in the Board during the past eighteen months,. The office of the late Sheriff was paying him less than $200 per mouth gross, barely meeting ex penses of board and servin...

Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, JULY 27,1878. How to Treat Itiui. Tlie appointment of Gen. Fre mont to be Governor of Arizona has elicited much comment and excited public curiosity. Guesses are made that he is coming out here in the interest of some rail road corporation, or of some mi ning syndicate; assertions are boldly published that he is coming to make Arizona a State, and him self one of its Senators. If he is coming here simply to discharge the duties of his posi tion, and to be a good Governor, he will fiud most of us willing to "staudin" with him. Butagainst any other purpose of his coming we protest. No one objects to his making money out of railroads or mines, provided that does not prove to be the only purpose of his coming here. But every re flecting citizen of Arizona will buck stiff-legged fo throw off a politician, who comes out here merely to ride us in a direction that may suit him ouly; who pro poses to get into the Senate upon Arizona's back, even if he has to cinch...

Arizona Sentinel. SATUMBAY, - - - AUGUST 3, 1S7S. The peculiarities of Hayes' ad ministration erop out prominently in its appointments to office. Last Sunday arrived here Air. St. Clair Dearing, a member of a wealthy and important family of Georgia. He was educated at West Point, by the United Slates, and was an artillery officer when the rebellion broke out. In fight ing against the United States he received wounds and incurred exposure which have seriously affected his health. It was thought that the climate of Arizona would benefit him, and an appointment was secured for him as a Special Indian Agent, to reside awhile at San Carlos. On arriving here it was evident that he could not eng dure the fatigues of the journey, and he returned to California. The climate of Los Angeles and Santa Monica seems to benefit him, and letters from citizens of Arizona have been asked for, in order that he may not lose his position and salary by not going on to San Carlos. He is evidently a gentlem...
