THE VINTON RECORD. McAKriIOR, OHIO, THURSDAY NOV. -tt, 1873. In em has been a severe con troversy going on between the newspapers of Columbus, in reference to the pre6eot bust ness condition of tit a t city. THE VINTON RECORD. McA Kill UK, Oil 10, TIIUKSDAV. DEC. 4, 1873. The Cause of Defeat. The partial Bticcees which the Democratic parly lias met with in the receut elections has had lie tendency to develop a few of the schemes which have laid doraianl since the close of the war. The assumption of the Southern States' debt?, tho re funding of the cotton tax, the payment by the nation for dam age and destruction of private property in the South during the war, and an allowance of $500,000,000 for the slaves set irce, are among a few of the schemes to bankrupt the na tional treasury under Demo cratic rule. It the recent elec tions 6howed an increase of Democratic strength we should ieel alarmed, in view of the dangers ahead; but the vote of the party has fallen so fir be low the vote of 1872 that we are safe in saying that Democ racy is no stronger than ii has been. We lost a few Slates because our friends were asleep. The large majorities of last year hail I he usual re buH, and as in p...

An additional force will also be put to work south of the M. & C. R R. in a short time. The prospects of the road are excellent. With a little more help from our people, which they are abundantly able to furnish, there will be no halt in the work between Gallipolis and the iron fields in Swan township. The completion of the other end of the road as originally intended will de pend on Logan. If they can afford to do without the rail road to that point we can too. Other points will perhaps suit our purposes better. Tub Cincinnati Gazette's market report of Tuesday says: There has been a large in crease in the volume of cur rency employed in active bus...

THE VINTON RECORD. McARTIIUR, OI1IO, TIIUKSDAY. DEC. 18, 187IJ. Hon. IJarvfy Wflls informs us that he ha: sold a two-thirl interest in the Buruly farm to a company Irom Dayton, Xenia and Washington, which will immediately commence the erection of two new furnaces. The figures we d'd not learn, but we know that Mr. Wells was prepared to offer it on very favorable terms, and that the company have got a good thing, for we believe there is no 6pot in the world where iron can be manufactnred at as low a fig ure. Mr. Wells lias organized his company and effected the sale under the most unfavorable circumstances, buying in the heighth of the panic and sell ing before it had run its course, while citizens generally threw cold water upon his enterprise, pronounced him crazy, and predicted that lie would lose all the money ho had in his crazy schemes. Tha trouble with them is that they have not progressed beyond the age of a fire place across the whole side of the house and a big back-log fir...
