I .'SUCCESS A DUTY."— It is A duty of the ■ReoubUcftn party to west the control of ■the Government from the hands of the ftcmocracy. A HAPPY MISUNDERSTANDING. —The Oregon Statesman (Salem) of 21st February says: When Laugen was about to be sentenced at the recent term of the Court iD Polk county, for killing Mountain Robson, Judge Boi*e asked him what he had to say why sentence should not be pronounced against him. "And may it plase the Court," was the | reply, "I have a mule mid a horse, and will the Court plase appoint the Sheriff to haul me over to the French Prairie." The Judge asked him why he wanted to go to French Prairie. '•To be buried [in the Catholic burying ground] to be sure." The Court explained, that his offense being murder in the second degree, was not punishable with death, but with imprisonment and hard labor. '•And is that it, to be sure ?*' replied Langen, his face lightiug up, "I'm used to hard work." MAMMIFEROCS RELIC. —Mr. A. Denner, of this place, in excavating the base of the hill to the north-west of the town, for the foundation of a house, struck upon the skeleton of a whale, which was...
