HOW IT SEEMS TO A STRANGER. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 20 November 1873

HOW IT SEEMS TO A STRANGER. Editor Herald:—Having mtely arrived on the Pacific Coast, I congratulated myself on reaching Los Angeles in time for your District Pair, deeming it the best opportunity 1 should have for securing reliable information concerning the productions of Southern California. On examining the programme as published in the city papers, I found much about horse-racing, but very little of farm products, and the programme was faithfully carried out. There whs horse-racing everyday; but the magnificent fruits, the mammoth vegetables, the fine grains and the succulent grasses, which we in the east hear so much of, were not there. Pool-selling, betting on this horse or that, and speculations In regard to the winner, was all I could hear. Ou the streets, in hotels, at the ground, everybody, men, women and children were talking of the races, and all this excitement and interest was occasioned by trials of speed between horses that could barely make their mile in a trifle u...

AN ESSAY ON ELEMENTARY LAW IN SCHOOL. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 21 November 1873

AN ESSAY ON ELEMENTARY LAW IN SCHOOL. Read b r|Ka!>ert M. Furlong before the Te truer,' Association. The subject which I have selected one that cannot be wholly unfamiliar to any of you. Yet it is a topic...that 1 never heard discussed; never" have listened to in form of an essay; never have seen a disseration upon, except in the works of writers on Jurisprudence. Perhaps I should offer an apology for advancing a theory which many will pronotfnce impracticable, but, begging leave to differ in opinions with those who will thus consider it, I will simply state my ideas on the subject at the risk of being termed a wild and impracticable theorist. In the brief space allowed for an essay it is impossible to be so compresive as to include all the means by which any certain end can be attained, therefore, I shall not expect to enter into all the minutiae of the subject by particularizing or showing the precise manner in which a course of law studies should be conducted in the sc...
