WEDNESDAY MORNING, MARCH 13, 1850 Our Indian Tiih«». [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 13 March 1850

WEDNESDAY MORNING, MARCH 13, 1850 Our Indian Tribes. It is usual to associate with preconceptions naturally formed in the mind of the emigrant about to start for California, an indefinable dread of savage terrors, such as saucy Indians and prowling wild beasts are apt to inspire. In the fancies of every adventurer from civilized and enlightened scenes there are always pictured many unreal dangers attendant on their trip into these remote wilds, and lot him bo over so well informed concerning the history of his future home, and the character of its inhabitants, deriving his knowledge from the best accredited testimony, there will still be a vast deal of unnecessary appreheneions nurtured. This all-prev-alent impression is carried around Cape Horn, and comes across the country i...

Prospecting for new and better diggings has also been the cauxe of much suffering, besides the loss of valuable time. Last September a party of twenty-eight left Mdrmon Island, South Fork of American River, (where they were doing well,) for King's ivcr, whUh is a small stream about three hundred miles south of this city, and empties into the \nn Joaquin. They made this move on the strength of some reports which had reached them from ii so...

LOCAL MATTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 13 March 1850

LOCAL MATTERS. Rtstn uranti.— The manner in which restaurants have fallen off is truly surprising. Man/ which hare been started with the moat flattering prospect*, with a fine run of custom and a well supplied larder, well kept tables And attention hare done an excellent l>ii«in»>«<r If a person desired a broiled bird ami any little "fixing" or delicacy to tempt a waning and treacherous appetite, there were half a <loien little places where he could gratify his taites. Now, however, there are scarcely any within our ken with the exception of those where a regular bill of fare in pre.«cribed. This has in part been caused by the increase in the number of restaurants And eating houses, which has caused a reduction of prices and a deterioration in the manner of serving up. An Bennett would say, the "cheap and nasty system" is beginning to prevail, and old established places are, one after the other, daily closing for want of that character of ...
