Southwest Chinese Journal THE VOICE OF THE CHINESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY VOL. 9 NO. 1 P.O.BOX 18603 a& & afr It HOUSTON, TEXAS 77223 JANUARY 1984 A New Year Message Advisory Committee Meets With City Hall By Rev. David K. Chan Pastor, Houston Chinese Church New Year is a time to say good-bye to the past and welcome in the new In Chi- nese tradition, we have many ways to symbolize this process of renewal. On New Year's Eve, we are to clean the house and throw away all trash. Everyone, espe- cially the children, must take a bath to wash away the bad luck of the past. When the clock strikes twelve, the New Year is ushered in with firecrackers, supposedly to drive away the evil spirits Everybody puts on new clothing and shoes, and greets each other with the magic words "Kung Hey Fatt Choy," wishing great prosperity in the coming year. Although many of us do not uphold such traditions anymore, the spirit of New Year is still evident. 1983 was a year of hardship for many. Houston suf...

South went Chinene Journal JANUARY 1984 COMMUNITY NEWS Relatives and friends attended a very special and wonderful occasion on November 26 at Golden Bo Restaurant: the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Jow. The dinner was hosted by their children, Josephine Jue, Mylew Ligh, Vance Jow, Houston Jow and Sonny Jow. Congratulations to Journal writer San- dra Wong Der Bing, who recently was selected to receive a scholarship in the Respiratory Therapist Program she has been taking at Houston Community Col- lege. Sandra, wife of Bill Der Bing, Jr., is a fine example of today's generation of Chi- nese American women —raising two llll children, pursuing a new profession, and still finding time to involve herself in the community through her excellent contri- butions to the Journal. December was quite a month for Michael Y. Chou, president of Quadrant Consultants, Inc. On December 20, he and wife Lily became parents of 7-pound, 7-ounce Wei, their first heir. ...

JANUARY 1984 & rh -ftl Southwest Chinese Journal Page 5 Asian Americans in Politics: A Brief Overview By Allan Gor As Lily Lee Chen, recently sworn in as mayor of Monterey Park, California, set- tles into her responsibilities as the first female Chinese mayor in the United States, there is ample evidence to suggest that hers was no fluke achievement, but a confirmation of Asian Americans' grow- ing political clout throughout the nation. In California In California alone, reported Jay Mathews in the Los Angeles Times, Asian Americans have exerted considerable political influence across the board. Cali- fornia's secretary of state is March Fong Eu, the only Asian American elected to statewide office in the continental U.S. In the U.S. Congress, two Japanese Ameri- cans, Reps. Norman Mineta and Robert Matsui, serve their California districts. Asian Americans in California also hold numerous judgeships, college presiden- cies and municipal offices. Page 6 ^7 r£j A t Southwest Chinese Journal In Appreciation REFLECTIONS To Journal Readers: Some of you may know me, some may not. I often complain that I don't have time—time to help, time to meet TIME period. I guess I'm a workaholic. Never- theless, sometimes one has to make time, if one expects others to do so. For the past year, I'have periodically expressed my thoughts in the Southwest Chinese Journal. During all that time, I have considered it a chore to spend time to collect my thoughts on paper. I have thought little about the general signifi- cance of what I wrote, about audience reaction, about the Journal. However, once in a while, we all need to put things in perspective Thus, I have now given some thought to my writings and the Journal. On the occasion of the coming of the New Year, I take this opportunity to con- gratulate the paper, Gene and Hedy Lee, and their colleagues on the staff of Jour- nal contributors for being the first Chinese-American English language pap...

JANUARY 1984 ^7 4il Southwest Chinese Journal Page 7 My Unforgettable Experience in the United States By Zhu J ic Sitting at home, facing my family and friends in China, I am recalling my expe- rience in the States. All my senses come alive as I am prodded with questions— "What is your impression of the United States?" "Did you feel staying there for two years was too long?" "What does the landscape look like?" "How about Ameri- can families?" Endless questions come to me. After having answered my enthusi- astically curious countrymen's questions as best as I could, I would like to share with readers some of my personal feel- ings about my stay in the United States I acted as a visiting scholar in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Houston, doing research work with some American professors in the field of automatic control theory and the control of electrical power systems. I spent half of my time on some pure theo- retical topics and the other half in the...

Page 8 ^ $1 Southwest Chinese Journal JANUARY 1984 My Travels in the Orient By Rex Tai Rex Tai was born and raised in Hono- lulu, Hawaii, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate ol Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He is 25, single and has lived in Houston for the past three years. His company, Fundraiser Mar- keters, specializes in creative wholesaling. From late March to late April of this year, Rex traveled with his father to visit Hong Kong, Canton, Peking, Shanghai, Tokyo and Taiwan. The Journal is pleased to share with read- ers the first installment of Rex Tai's account of his 1983 travels in Asia. Continued from last issue In all of China that we saw, there are swarms of bicyclists, and tons of people walking around, too. Buses are packed, and there are few cars, usually taxis. It's almost as if there's a war between bicycles and cars Bicy- cle riders are reckless. They don't stay on the side of the road or look out for their own safety. As a result, there are accidents. Motorists...

JANUARY 1984 ^7 r^) 4ll Southwest Chinese Journal Page 9 Peking The CAAC is the only airline sanc- tioned for air travel between Chinese states. I never felt comfortable riding in one of its planes. The seats and leg space are cramped, the plane is old, and the interior is outdated. The ride is bumpy and it's wise to take air- sickness pills. When I got back to America, I noticed newspaper arti- cles about planes crashing in China. I believe it. Peking is a little like Washington, D.C. China's capital is cleaner and more built-up than other provinces; streets are wider, air is cooler and cleaner. I noticed that some men are as tall as I am, six feet. Most Chinese are short, but I heard that men are taller the more northward one goes. I think that's true. One humorous explanation is that in the northern part of China, they eat long grain rice, and in the south, short grain rice. As usual when we come to a new place, Dad sends a letter to his old military buddies, and I scour all the ...

Tommy currently serves as a co-president of the Asso- ciation of Chinese Organizations along with Terry Chang Gee. Tommy can be considered one of the Chinese pioneers in Texas, for in 1933 he entered the U.S. via San Francisco to settle in Beaumont, Texas, where his parents started a restaurant business. Perhaps Houston's penchant for Chinese food had its genesis in 1934, when the Gin Gor family moved to Houston and established a second Chinese restaurant on Louisiana and Polk. Recalls Tommy, the population of Chinese Houstonians at that time numbered approximately 100, and "everybody knew everybody else." After the sale of their Louisiana and Polk business in 1937, they opened their third restaurant located inside the old Bristol Hotel on Rusk and Tra- vis, where they cont...
