COLUMN Continued from Page 1 — "Gays, the new Jews?" — from the title of a column written by Danny Miller, a contributing writer for both Salon magazine and the Los Angeles Times. In his column, Henson construct- ed a bistorically-based argument for likening the current persecution of the GLBT community to the persecution of the Jews during and leading up to World War II. Two days later, the newspaper published Sartain's column that began: "Damn, George. You've crossed the line yet again and need some help. No sweat, I'm here to help you and the entire gay community with a few suggestions." Sartain wrote that "we, the straight communi- ty do love you," and includes frequent assurances of tolerance and acceptance. But he also includes numerous apparently less-than-tolerant refer- ences, such as "your made-up hissy fit that you are being mistreated," "they should migrate to a more welcoming area," "pockets of wacko liber- als" and "deviant behavior." "Your flamboyancy kills whatever i...

loci news McLaughlin responded by asking the reporter to read a column by a Baptist evangelist that addressed homosexuality. The reporter then advised McLaughlin she was advising the news- paper's computer technicians to bar anymore e- mails from her. McLaughlin then sent copies of the reporter's e-mail to about 40 employees of the newspaper, including those that work in areas other than edi- torial. A managing editor followed up by sending an e-mail chastising McLaughlin for sending copies of the reporter's e-mail to other employees of the newspaper. She accused McLaughlin of harass- ing the reporter. McLaughlin said the reporter's e-mail shocked her because the reporter seemed to be as passion- ate as she was about the injustice done to the child and his parents. "I felt betrayed," McLaughlin said. "I would have expected her to be more professional. When I read it, I get so angry I can't hardly read through it.'1 McLaughlin said she was concerned the news- paper backed away from t...

riage is entirely lawful," Taylor said in a state- ment Wednesday. "No federal, state or local law has been violated. Not everyone likes the univer- sity's policy. But the university does not establish policy on the basis of popularity or political cor- rectness; our policies are rooted in the values of the institution." Although most of the participants in the protest were college students from across Kentucky, few showed up from the nearby University of the Cumberlands. Jennifer Fore, one of the organizers who attends the school, said she thinks students fear they will be disciplined if they speak out. Fore, who is heterosexual, said she personally knows of at least 40 gay students who attend the school but have simply kept their sexual orienta- tion private from administrators. She said she supposes a higher percentage of gay students attend small private colleges than large public ones. "It is the Bible belt," she said. "I think more gay students come to the smaller colleges. Th...

Two months after the child's birth in September 2004, the court held a routine hearing to terminate the birth mother's parental rights and clear the baby for adoption. At that time, Judge Hanson ordered the inlant be adopted by a couple rather than an individual, because she was not considered a "hard to place" child. He confirmed this decision in a subsequent hearing in December, instructing the Office of Family and Children to find a suitable married couple to fit the bill. In January, before such a couple could be iden- tified, Hamilton andBrennan filed a joint petition for adoption in Marion County Probate Court. By then, the partners of 11 years had passed a home inspection, and had won praise from Witze and the birth mother as well. The only entity to object was the Morgan County Office of Family and Children. But even their objection was a technical rather than quali- tative one, pointing out that while the women would be great parents, the office had been instructed by the J...

inalnews California Supreme Court refuses to review domestic partner challenge The California Supreme Court on April 12 refused to review a lower court ruling upholding the state's domestic partnership law. The Third District Court of Appeals had issued a ruling in January that upheld two domestic part- nership statutes, including the Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act that provides hundreds of legal protections for same-sex cou- ples and their families, but falls short of allowing same-sex couples to file joint tax returns or have access to more than 1,000 federal protections given to married straight couples. Equality California, a GLBT rights organiza- tion, had intervened as a defendant in the case filed by the Campaign for California Families. After the Supreme Court refused to review the case, Geoffrey Kors, Equality California's exec- utive director, said, "Tens of thousands of California families feel safer today now that the attack on their rights by the Campa...
