A common name for the tomato atone time was "lovo apple," because of its supposed aphrodistacal qualities and the beauty of its fruit. It is indigen ous to South America an J the name tomato is taken from an Aztec word "zltoloinati," A century ago the tomato was used very little for food: lii fact, was at one time considered poison ous. The earliest record of Seed being offered by seedsmen lor sale was in l81fj.
