HOBART-TOWN: SATURDAY JUNE 23, 1827. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 23 June 1827

HOB ART-TOWN: SATURDAY JUNE 23, 1827,   In all new countries and newly formed colo nies, it has been a general complaint that the attention being so much occupied in the actual   business of settling, the mind and its acquire- ments have been lamentably neglected. Van Diemen's land we trust will form an exception   to this precedent, and the desire of getting know-   ledge as well as money will prevail. The ex- cellent regulation by Lord Bathurst of affording encouragement only to such emigrants as pos-   sessed a capital of at least £500 has been the means of forming its population above the usual character of new countries. We have from time to time endeavoured to impress upon our readers the great importance of education, and the imperious necessity which calls upon every parent and every inhabitant to promote it. Attention to this will more than any other in sure the welfare, the morality of the community. For this...

TO CORRESPONDENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 30 June 1827

TO CORRESPONDENTS. We have received several communications re- specting the pews in St. David's church. We certainly highly approved of the setting apart one-seventh of the crown lands in every pa- rish for the support of the church, because we considered that portion amplv sufficient to supply the place of tithes and every other ex- action of church rates. The excellent system now adopting by Government, of remunerat- ing its officers by one distinct and fixed salary, and abolishing the practice of fees and other ^trifling sources of emolument, ought long ago ? to have been extended to the church. We have adverted to the subject of assigned servants id another page.

HOBART-TOWN: SATURDAY JUNE 30, 1827. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 30 June 1827

HOBART-TOWN:     SATURDAY JUNE 30, 1827.         The difficulties attending the assignment of servants have of late become much the subject of complaint. Settlers in the interior, and especi- ally at Launceston, labour under much incon- venience, and the Principal Superintendent in town, is constantly receiving informal applica- tions, with which, by his instructions, he cannot comply. A stated form of application was pub- lished on the 28th. of December last, and a Go- vernment notice of the 1st. of May, requires that some one shall be in town to receive the servant on the day of assignment, pay for such slop clothing as he may obtain from the King's store, & forward him without delay to the place of his destination. It is, however, a delicate matter for a settler in the country to require an ac- quaintance in town io undertake these duties for him, and when he has requested, it is still a mat- te...
