Report from the Mining District. (By a Special Correspondent[?]) [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 28 November 1874

Report from the Mining; District. (By a Special Correspondent,) As far as actual returns are concerned the mining report of the Northern Territory goldtiekls since the previous visit of the Gothenburg is not exciting ; but as regards our prospects there is little cause for despondency. Tho Gothenburg will probably take away 3,500 ounces of gold, but only some seven or eight hun- dred of this amount is the result of crusliings, the balance being alluvial gold taken principally from the neighbor- hood of Sandy Creek ajul the Howley. The deficiency in our quartz returns is explained by the fact that proper pro- vision had not been been made for a permanent water supply ; and that, con- sequently, tile stampers have been silent for some weeks. The process of change is still being carried on ; company atter company has been wound up or reformed until there is hardly one original company left ; nnd those reef-, which two years ago were the cause of unlimited excitement and specu- lation a...

Remarkable Notes, No. 1. "A chiel's amang ye takin notes, An' faith he'll prent it."—Burns. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 5 December 1874

Remarkable Notes, No. 1 By Busybody. : A chiel's ainang ye tákin notes, ..An' faith he'll prent it."-Burns. Sir-:-Whilst, walking up and down through the Territory, and to and fro in it sometime ago, my attention was called to the nature of a peculiar looking quartz reef, which on ex- amination I . found to be tolerably rich in gold. On enquiry I was told by my cicerone that he was a small .shareholder, and then in charge of a claim taken up on this reef. That although he was the original dis- coverer, a person sent from Adelaide to "represent promoters' interests had registered the claim ; that that per- son had returned to the capital leaving him in charge. In answer to the'question, " Why are you not working such a valuable piece of ground ?" I was told that the War- den "had granted suspension during the absence of the manager, who had left four men to lojk after it, but that they were reduced to three by the d:pafture of one of their num- ber to greener fields " and pastures ne...
