CAUTION TO SHIP-MASTERS. To the Editor of the Bay of Islands Observer. Bay of Islands, New Zealand, July, 20th, 1842. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 1 October 1842

CAUTION TO SHIP-MASTERS. To theJEditor of the Bay of Islands Observer. Bay of Islands, New Zealand, July, 20th, 18+2. SIR, - Having recently very narrowly es- caped shipwreck, I' beg leave through your paper to make known the existence of a very dangerous Reef (not laid down in any charts estant, and probably before unknown). Leaving Whytcrtach, one of the Societv Is- lands, on tlie20tli June, steeringW.S.W., all hands were roused on Sunday, the 26'th, be- tween the hours of 5 and 6 a.m., by the Officer of the" watch, who, in much confusion, was ?using every exertion to avoid the danger, lie alone had discovered. I reached the deck in time to have a fair view of the Reef, as we passed to the windward of itat ubutittwocables length, as near as I could judge. It being dark ns at midnight at the_ time, could not determine its size, but think it about two ship* length, N.E. and S.W. The wind blow-, injr a gale at the time ut E. by S., the ship running off eight knots, under reefed topsa...

[CONTINUED.] IM til? former article we shewed, from the evidence of some of our most wealthy nnd intelligent colonists, thnt the agricultural nnd grazing interests nrc now suffering under the deepest depression ; nnd from the facts thus established we drew the ob- vious inference, thnt ns those interests ar¿ the foundntion upon which nil our other in tcrests vest, the rates of Bank interest are in absurd and monstrous disproportion to the nvcrngc rates of profit. The several prac- tical bearings of this deduction we shall pursue hereafter, when we resume that A-arfare against usurious tyranny which re shall ever feel it our duty to vwage, j, .rjlil the iniquity be put down. j>^» Having seen the reality and extent of , ^St^cVpression, vpe must now look into ils I II. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 1 October 1842

SOUTH AUSTRALIA. WE yesterday received Adelaide papers to i the 7th September. Trade, we arc sorry i to say, was as dull, and the depression of the times was as great as it has been at any time within the last twelve months. Governor GREY, who holds the most unenviable office in Her Majesty's service, appeared to be very unpopular, although we can hardly tell why, for the circum- stances which have led to the present state of Adelaide, occurred long before Captain G REY was made Governor, and some of them are incidental to the system on which the colony of Adelaide is founded. The new port regulations which impose additional, and certainly very high port charges, had created great dissatisfaction. A public meeting was held in the theatre, the Right Worshipful the Mayor in the chair, at which a petition to the Queen was adopted, pra\ing that the Legislative Council might not be allowed to impose any taxes until members elected by the people were added to it. The Town Council, suspend...

1 IMMlGMTÏoN.-1Ô4Ô. ï MINUTES OF EVIDENCE TAKEN BEFORE THE IMMIGRATION COMMITTEE.-[Continued.'] ^ _ , WEDNESDAY, JUNI: 22. Robert Scott, Esq., of Glendon, called in nnd examined : 1. You have been more than once ex- amined before Hie Immigration' Com- mittee? Yes, either twice or thrice. 2. Last year was one of those occa- sions? It was. 3. With reference to the evidence then given bj you, will vou have the goodness to say, whether your subsequent expe- rience has confirmed the opinions you then expressed, or whether they have undergone any change, and if so, in what particulars ? I think my opinions are the same now as then. In many points they have been strongly confirmed, pniticularly respecting the " Squatting Act." I am, however, able to hire as many servants now as I please ; then I could not ; but "the immigrants have not been of so good n description as they ought to have been, considering the cost of their introduction, «nJ that the money waa supplied by this colour.
