On Sunday Rev. Canon Drought, M.A., will preach special sermons in connection with the War and Em pire, in Christ Church, Melton, at 11 o'clock and 7.30. Mr. Godfrey will conduct the services at Toolern Vale at 11; Rockbank at 3; and Railway station at 7.30. Stacking operations are still in full swing. Many have completed, and others nearly so. There is a fair proportion of wheat to thresh this year, and the crops look good. Some are not yet cut, and good yields are expected. On Thursday 5 points of rain fell, which has had the effect of cooling the atmosphere. The contract for the main road is getting on towards completion. It is estimated that all the metal will be on by Monday next, and there is the rolling to complete. It is ex pected that those portions of the side streets, where the boxing-in was taken from, will be graded before the grader leaves here, and made somewhat even on the bottom. The road has tihe appearance of being a very good one, and no doubt the motorists will ...

TRAINING NOTES, BACCHUS MARSH CUP. [Newspaper Article] — Melton Express — 11 December 1915

TRAINING NOTES, BACCHUS MARSH CUP. (By Aeroplane). The track:has been well patron ized during the week and my posi tion gives me ample scope to criti cise the different candidates doing their sprints. O'Hagan's Milk Cart takes kindly to work, and looks like a stayer. Pearce's Lucerne Chaff is very green, and will take time and careful handling to keep in order. Johns' Lager Beer goes off at a pop from the very start, and is soon all froth, and does not fin ish to my liking. Vigor's Referen dum takes a lot of starting, and even then was soon blown out, and he abandoned any further chances for the week, pulling up slightly stiff. F. Crook's Enlisted, by Three Fighting from Another Willing, (a new candidate On the track), shows great form, and appears quite at home doing preliminaries; he is in my opinion a promising horse, and must meet with strong support in the Park. He is very unlike an other new candidate, Conscript, by Won't Budge from Bacchus Marsh, the owner's name I was unable...

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH JUBILEE, BACCHUS MARSH. [Newspaper Article] — Melton Express — 11 December 1915

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH JUBI LEE, BACCHUS MARSH. The present Church building, after being buffeted by. 50 years of time, might be likened to a great battleship, whlich has just emerged from its periodical docking to unamder go a thorough overhauling and gen eral clean-up, both inside and out, so that it will not have its speed and general usefuliiess impeded. The Church, which is of bluestone, with sandstone, facings; has been gone over from steeple spire to foun dations. The walls have been re grouted and colored; the roof, &c., painted and repaired; thle founda tions rendered with cement. And altogether the building looks secure enough for another 50 years of work. The improvements to the interior of the Church are more noticeable. When once the contractor started to "clear for action," it was found that the work would be more extensive than anticipated. All the old seat ing was jettisoned; the walls and ceiling strippled of plaster. The walls have been replastered; but metal ...

SOLDIERS' LETTERS. Notes from Corporal W. Platt, of Bacchus Marsh: [Newspaper Article] — Melton Express — 11 December 1915

S9 SOLDIERS' LETTERS. Notes from Corporal W. Platt, of. Bacchus Marsh: King George Hospital, 13/10/15. I am still in the hospital, and do not know when I will be sent to the Base, but I ain much better, and have been out a. good deal lately. ITwo Australian ladies have been 'taking three of us out day and night for a week. One evening we were taken to .tlthe Lyceum theatre, and enjoyed it immensely; we laughed Sall the time, the first laugh we had since we left Egypt. But by jove we did not laugh on entering. We were carriedl into a stall near the stage, and the silence seemed dread .ful, then there was a cheer for the little bit of khaki. It seemed an age before we got settled. One day we were taken to Buckingham Palace, and as we were entering the gates Queen Alexandria was coming out in her car; we saluted, and she graci ously acknowledged us with a nod and a very sad smile. No doubt we considered it the greatest privilege of our lives to be able to serve one whose whole time is ...
