Advising the Prophet. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 23 April 1914

Advising the Prophet. He eutered the meteorological office, and said, in his jerky way: "This 'ere's where you give out weather predictions, ain't it?" The cleric nodded. "Well," continued the old man, "1 thought as how I would come up and give you some useful tips." "Yes?" said the clerk, politely. "I've watched very carefully, an' 1 find that ye ain't always right." "No; we sometimes make mis takes." "Course you do. We all do some times.' Now, I was thinlcin' as how a line that used to be on the auction handbills down in our county might da lust-rate oil your weather predic tions, and save you a lot of explain in'." "What was the line?" "Wind an' weather 'permittin'." He went down without waiting to say good-bye. The finger of suspicion generally wears a wedding ring. Love is only an explanation—never an excuse. A woman never cares how good a man Ib 1£ he'll only pretend to be bad.

WITH THE RIFLEWOMEN [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 23 April 1914

WITH THE RIFLEWOMEN Yesterday was one of the red-letter days in the year of the Coleraine La dies' Rifle Club. A contest between three teams—representing the ladies' club, the gentlemen's clu'*, and " the world"—took placo during the after noon at the Queen's Park range, and was largely attended, whilst very keen interest was shown in the scores made by the rival representatives. The range was 50 yards, seven shots each, handicap, Winchester rifles. The scores have come to hand, though, too late for this issue. Details will appear on Monday, but we may say that the ladies topped the score, the Coleraine club coming next. At the conclusion of the match Mr. W. Wheeler thanked the ladies for the pleasant match they had enjoyed. Last night at the Mechanics' Hall a dance was held in connection with the club, .and a pleasant time was spent under the master of ceremonies, Mr. H. Greed, while the music was supplied by Miss M'Phee. At the conclusion of the supper a number of trophies were pr...

Too Good. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 23 April 1914

Too Good. After living in a house for some thing under a week, a working-man took the key back to the agent the other day. "What's wrong?" demanded the agent. "Isn't the house good enough for you?" "It's too good, mister," was the re ply- "That's just it; it's too good." "What do you mean?" "Well; the wall is a-weeping for the sins of the roof, which, being jerry built, and teetotal, takes nowt but water. Every chimney's a non-smok er, and the 'ouse ain't no place for a hordinary sinner."

One of the teachers said he was 110 believer in the old hackneyed system of teaching. "What is wanted," said he, "is something which will make the chil dren think and reason for them selves. Mere addition and subtraction are mechanical. In accordance with his ideas, he gave his pupils one hundred questions, of which the following is a specimen: "What is it that can go up a spout down, but cannot go down a spout up?" The ibrain-fever hospitals there abouts were full of children for weeks afterwards,' and the teacher was dis missed without a character, yet the answer to the riddle was very simple —"An umbrella."
