Then He Saw Red. Editor—Why do you persist in coin ing here? I tell you I want facts, not fiction. Authoress—Oh, I dou't wish to sell any of my stories. I am writing a short serial, entitled "Tho Ugliest Man On Earth," and I camo in mere ly to obtain local color. Tho fare at a certain boarding house was very poor. A boarder who had been there for some time, be cause he could not got away, was standing In tho hall when the landlord rang tho dinner-bell. Whereupon an old dog that was lying outside on a rug commenced to howl mournfully. The boarder watched him a little while, and then said— "What on earth are you howling for? You don't have to cat It!" A girl iB put into the world, like sugar into tea, to sweeten it. Givo the devil his due. hut he care ful there's not much due to him. Nothing hurts a woman so much as when a man won't give hor an op portunity to say "No." Popularity depanda on how well you treat your frlouds, and how ofton.

LADIES' LETTER. I never rem&mber blouses that are j calculated to go to the heart of e\er\ woman who appreciates* an eleganc*-- j achieved by simple methods and with out any apparent effect than at tli>• present moment. They are now such , a very important Item of evyry kin 1 i of costume that the choice is an varied as the numerous distinctly different | classes of designs, all worthy of se parate consideration. _ From the simple shirt to the com plexity- of the afternoon or demi-toil- j lette blouse of tulle is a far cry. Com- | menciug at the bottom of the ladder so to say, with the simple shirts, these in themselves provide food for deep reflection. It is the American women who iooK their best in the severest of tailor made shirts. I do not mean t lie wo man whoso figure is at its best nor . the pretty creature who can carry oil j all kinds of fashionable follies ami modish madnesses, but the natural, homely American, who knows how to | put on her coithes. The Standard. PUBLISHED BI-WEEKLY. Beneath the rule of men entirely just the pon is mightier than tho sword. FRIDAY, MAY 8, 1911. The Hallway League at Sale is making strenuous efforts to link up the nor tliern and southern railway .systems by a connection between /.Iberton, via Yarraui, to Sale. Viewed from differ ent standpoints, the project has much to recommcnd it. it means the link ing up of Ciippsland with tliu Federal City and Sydney t>y the constat line. .1 section o£ which is now in course of construction between Bairnsdnle and Orbost. To complete the circuit it is necessary that the line from Albeiton should bo extended to North Gippsl.md. Sale has long recognised the possi bilities of such a connection, while many in this district have considered tho project futile. But viows have changed. The Yarram Railway League was formed ostensibly to urge con struction of a line to Yarrani, and being assured of that consummation by the recommended Alberton to M oti wron line, the...

Commercial-lane. MEETING OF PROPERTY-OWNEliS. The shiru council's notice to owners of property abutting on Commercial lane lias created quite a stir. All who liavo recoived tlio "bit of bluo" are invited to air their grievances at the meeting of council oil Thursday next, and by way of taking concerted action a meeting of those interested was held at the Club Hotel yesterday afternoon. As was pointed out, the council is act ing within its rights, but the hope wns expressed that they would see some way out of the dilliculty, after hairing the protest from the deputation. "The amount is staggering," remarked one spealcer. Up to £f>7 is certainly a large amount to pay out for lane im provements. The meeting passed a resolution, respectfully objecting to the scheme proposed by the engineer in Commercial-lane, between James and Yarram streets. The estimated cost of this short piece of work is £392 ! Pro perty-owners concerned decided to meet at the council chamber at 2.15 p.m. on Thur...
