The Jersey. AS A DAIRY COW. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

The Jersey, AS A DAIRY COW. ( I5y the 'Daily Telegraph's' Special Representative.) U it is a good thing to have difference of opinion even in the matter of cattle, then should the South Coast be happy. In this, the pioneer dairying district, the Shorthorn, in both its uuro and modified forms, is the dominant breed. Fully 75 per cent, of the lllawarra and Shoalhaven men pin their faith to the traditional lllawarra type. Pure Ayrshires have their fanciers, and the breed is generally popular for crossing on Shorthorn; Holsteins nre beginning fo make friends; but as to the Jerseys, the keepers of them could almost be counted on the fingers of one hand, notwithstanding that a ? ' good deal of money has from time to time been spent in the introduc tion of first-class blood. From the first the dairy fanners of those districts have been accus tomed to the big-bodied cattle, and the strong probability is that they will continue along the lines which they are satisfied suit their condi tions....

BREAKING THE ENGAGEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

BREAKING THE ENGAGE MENT- Dear .Tnek: I have something to tell you : I hardly know how to begin. I'm ashamed, but I think it is well you Should fathom the depths of my sin. You'll think that misfortune befell you That dnv — that sweat dav— when wo met, Though of course, dear, I could not compel you To love — or 'forget. I can't be engaged any longer j I've trieil and I've tried to lie true, But my wickedness soems to be stronger That even my love, dear, for you. Here's food for the glib scandal-monger — Ob, dear, how they'll talk about me ! Yet, still to be hound would be wrong, for I ought to be free. Kcal life is much different from fiction ; Tlie girl's who's bethrothed in a book Is possessed' of tlie earnest conviction There's but man that's worthy a look, In actual fact the restriction Seems only to tempt her the more. Oh, the heart is a strange contradiction When you're learned in its lore! I fancy you're saying, ' Who is he?' It isn't a man, dear— it's men ! Jly fancy must Ik...

Southern Monaro's Appeal. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

Southern Monaro's Appeal. Every progressive and broad minded individual must have a sympathetic chord in his heart for the communities which are strugg line for freedom from local trade and commercial environment, and are, in a practical way, trying to overcome the disabilities of isola tion, the result of years of the cal lous governmental and administra tive treatment of successive city bound and press-driven Govern ments. There can be nothing but admiration for .'the plucky and iu uepeuueni people who are usiuiig the Victorian Government to ex tend the railway from Bairnsdale to the border of New South Wales. For many years the people in the magnificent fertile districts of South Monaro have been urging successive N.S.W. Governments' to construct the railway line from Cooma to Bombala, and although a definite promise was made by Premier Carruthcrs to take some practical steps in this direction no thing has been done, and, exaspe rated by repeated disappointments nnrl n cfiwlin/1 ...

The Show Week. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

The Show Week. ? ?? ? m Next week Bega has a more than usually attractive programme to engage the attention of visitors. Despite the diy- spell and the usual predictions that ' the show won't be much ' and that ' farm produce will be a failure,' the Budget expects the 34th annual exhibition to rank high in general attractiveness. Every year the same old predictions regarding failure are made which most people have come to regard as ' the same old song only a different year.' The committee as usual will have everything in readiness for both pavilion, pen, and ring exhibitors. The Kameruka Estate will show what can be douu in the way of fruit drying, an industry which . has grown to big pro portions on the Estate under the expert management of Mr. T. Moody. Mr. E.T. Gould, an enthusiast in ail the 'olog'cs, will exhibit his famous collection from the Verona public school. His museum includes hundreds of specimens of insects and many curiosities. As You Like It. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

As You Like It ??imust have liberty Withal, ns lame u charter us the wind, To Moir on H-lioui 1 please.' -' As You L' Ice it.' (Act II.. sc. 7). A PAitAGiiAPii appeared in a country print witi reierence to a guu licensing Act, making it appear that the law applied to N.S.W — thatit was passed by our Legislature. The man in the street knows that, however desirable it might be that this State should have such an Act there is none in force at present. And yet a number of newspaper men don't know this much. These be '? blind leaders of the blind.' « * * At a recent lecture in London, Dr. Bernard Hollander theorised on the 'woman question,' and said that the woman movement is not caused because there are more women than men,' but because there are fewer men inclined to marry. Every woman wants a husband, but every, man doesn't want a wife nowadays. The Budget ventures to disagree with the learned authority, and from observation makes the assertion that the girl who isn't particular wheth...

THE CANDELO SHOW. (FOR THE BUDGET.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

: THE CANDELO SHOW, ,?? (For the Budget.) This is ;one of the most popular shpwifixtures on the South Coast, and'itKwas unfortunate that tho welcome rain should have clashed with';:Candelo's great yearly re union. 'But the great Ruler who controls mundane things has no re spect for earthly arrangements, and pours down his blessings irre spective of show fixtures or tho little affairs of men. All tho same' the rain which began to fall on Wednesday morning and continued luicimineuuj wiruuj£!iuub Mm uu.y kept hundreds of visitors away, and tho attendance was probably the smallest the Society has ever had. Of course any pecuniary loss falls- on the' unlucky individual who bought the right to the gate takings, but a small attendance has a depressing effect all round. On the second day (ho morning broke clear and line, but it required no weather prophet to see that these conditions would not last through the 'day, and in the afternoon a heavy thunderstorm broke over tho .town. Still tho a...

From Our Correspondents. TANJA. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 March 1906

From Our Correspondents. TANJA. On Monday night, in the Tanja Hall, a grand complimentary so cial was tendered Mr. Will Evans on the eve of his marriage. A large number of friends were pre sent, and all expressed their hearty     good wishes for his future happi ness and prosperity. The big hall was taxed to its utmost, and the dancers had to put up with a lot of jostling. Apparently they did not mind that, but entered into the spirit of the entertainment right merrily. The night was warm, and so were the dancers, and a few gentlemen who wore high linen collars suffered in consequence— or rather their collars did. Mr. M. G. Clarkson was chairman, and had on his right the guest of the evening, a few other gentlemen also occupying seats on the plat form. The chairman in a few words explained the reason of the gathering, and spoke in compli mentary terms of Mr. Evans. Mr. Toldie Wright also spoke and en dorsed the remarks of the chair man. Mr. J. Byron, Tanja'...
