South Africa. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

South Africa. Socially this is a dull season of the year at the Cape, with the Jewish community in particular, and the seasonal quietness just now is accentuated by the prevailing commercial- and financial depression all over South Africa, which greatly militates against social functions (says the correspondent to the Jewish World) However, this wfek I have one interesting marriage to record, that of Mr, JCli Huirski, of the well-known firm of South African produce merchants, Lieberman and Buirski, to Miss Sarah Buirski, which took place at the synagogue nere Laso vvecmesaay yanuary zt-j. Trie officiating clergyman was the Rev. A. P. Bender, and all the prominent members of our community attended. In honor of the event, Mr. H. Lieberman, uncle of both bride and bridegroom, and hon. treasurer of the Hebrew Congregation, entertained the inmates of all the charitable i?istitutions in Capetown — a depa ture, the example of which, might more off en be followed with advantage. So continuo...

The Introduction of the Sinaic Revelation [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

The Introduction of the Sinaic Revelation The nineteenth chapter of Exodus is a record of the grandest and most awfully sublime fact that ever occurred in history. All known elements of grandeur and sublimity are united In the awe-inspiring picture — which is too grand to be fictitious— phantasy cannot soar so hiffh — and too sublime to be sober, simple fact ; although we must confess that we stand too far away in time and space from the then prevailing circumstances and occasional evolutions of phenomenal nature to tell with Certainty that it was or was not so ; as we, cold as we are and distant frcm nature, can hardly think or imagine any more, what divine inspiration is, when the individual intelligence is in direct intercommunication with the Universal Intelligence, what a person under such influence then is, feels, thinks, Bees, hears, attempts and does — it is impossible for us cold, practical, rationalistic machines to realise. Yet according to the most ancient Eabbinical com...

Moses at the Burning Bush. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

Moses at the Burning Bush. F. J. Otterson. 'rTwas summer time in Midian Three thousand years ago. The sunbeams, falling vertical, Like mollen fire did flow — On Horeb's angel-troJden hill, On Arab's arid plain, - In every dell the fire-flood fell, .,. As falls a summer rain. Olose at the holy mountain's foot A. clustering forest stood, As if the trees instructive sought -j The dwelling place of God ; ' , With leafy arms intwined, they made A sun-proof a'ch of green, And gently play 'd within the shade A thousand forms unseen. ? Twas sultry noon— all silently Beneath the cool trees sleeping, An Israelitish shepherd lay, ? While, round about him creeping, ? - The fleecy herd came carefully, ' And, bowing down before him, : Gazed tearfully and prayerfully, As if they would adore him. Look I on the mountain-top descended, A gorgeous cloud of fulgent Glory v Hath with the sun its radiance blended, And maie his beams look pale and hoary j Look ! down the mountain grandly going, The bright...

GREAT SYNAGOGUE, SYDNEY. PRESENTATION TO MISS SARA ISAACS The services at the Great Synagogue on Saturday last were conducted by the Chief Rabbi, the Rev. A. B. Davis. The Rev. J. H. A special prayer was offered for the continuance of their journey without mishap. The Rev. A. B. Davis before ' Adon Alom,' said that he would have the pleasing duty of -presenting Miss Sara Isaacs, the leader of the Synagogue Choir, with an address to mark the regret the members of the choir felt at losing their comrade, and the congre gation at the loss of her valued services. He also stated that it had been arranged that Miss Isaacs sing the closing hymn as a solo, as a mark of sincere com pliment. On completion of the services the Rev. A. B. A PLAQUE HOSPITAL POE THE BENE ISRAEL. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

A PLAGUE HOSPITAL FOB THE BENE ISEAEL. A most enthusiastic meeting of the Bene Is rael community was held on Sunday the 1 6th January, 1898 at 7.30 p.m. in the Jewish New Synagogue, Israel Moholla, Bombay, to. con sider the subject of erecting a special plague hospital for the Jews. The plague having in creased, all the communities opened special hospitals or their o tvn ; but their being untor tunately no communal funds in the Bene Is land community, no movement was made in this direction. In the communal hospitals people feel as if at home, and consequently no cases are concealed. This year their being more deaths in the community and the neces sity of a hospital being publicly talked of everywhere, a meeting requisition signed by eleven persons, all influential members of the community, was sent round asking people to come and discuss the subject. In response to the invitation, nearly seven hundred Bene Israel attended the meeting. The Synagogue was thronged throughout and there ...

A Famous Opera Singer. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

A Famous Opera Singer. John Braham, the composer of the ' Death of Nelson,' was born in London of Jewish parents in 1774. Losing both parents at an early age, he is said to have sold pencils in the street for a living, and while so engaged attracted the notice of Leoni by his remarkable voice. The singer adopted the boy, and gave him lessons in music and singing. He made such progress tnat at tnirteen ne appeared at L,ovent Garden, and was announced in the bill as ' Master Braham, being his first appearance on any stage.' At the opening of the Koyalty Theatre in Wellclose-square Braham was included in the programme, and continued there till his voice broke in 1789. About this time Leoni became bankrupt, and Braham was thrown on his own resources, and for a time gave lessons on the piano. Sir Walter Scott said of Braham, 'That he was a beast of an actor, but an angel of a singer.'

No title [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

A paragraph in the Catholic Press, of 26th March, leads its readers to infer that a deputation of gentlemen — from the Synagogue authorities — had waited on the Editor. This statement we are enabled to contradict. ' The most perilous hour of a person's life is when he is tempted to despond! The man who loses his courage loses all ; there is no more hope of him than of a dead man. But — it matters not how poor he may be, how much pushed by circumstances, how much lost to the world — if he only keeps his courage, holds up his head, works on and with unconquerable will determines to be and do what becomes a maD, all will be well. It is nothing outside of him that kills — it is what is within that makes or unmakes ' And if you find you cannot, unaided, overcome the difficulties and adver sites surrounding you, ask the advice of youu brother, and he may be able to direct you into paths to you unknown and untried that may bring you success; for what is fraternal brotherhood good for if it...

THE JEWS OF SYDNEY. LETTER FROM CARDINAL MORAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

THE JEWS OF SYDNEY. LETTER FROM CARDINAL MORAN. In our last issue we intimated an intention to challenge an article pullished by the Catholic Press, a weekly newspaper printed in Sydney, on the 19th March, as it appeared to us to have been the outcome of some vicious attempt to introduce a feeling of anti-Semitism quite on a line with that which has raged in Paris over the Dreyfus affair. Knowing the excellent qualities ot the leader ot tne Uatnoiic com munity, his Eminence Cardinal Moran, and fearing that it might give some offence to the gentlemen who have so favourably admitted of the Catholic and Jewish interests being worked together, we delated until we had heard tne Cardinal's view. We are proud to find that his goodwill prompted an immediate answer, which sets all possible thought, of the Catholic clergy having issued the gross im« putation on our Community. As the Catholic I Press has since issued a toned criticism of the I article expressing regret, the publication of the ...

The Dreyfus Affair. ENGLISH PRESS OPINIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 April 1898

The Dreyfus Affair. ENGLISH PEESS OPINIONS. 2hnes. — The great world which passes the final and irrevocable verdict ? will see in M. Zola a man who refused to sit still while a great wrong was perpetrated ? M. Labori's conduct of the trial has made it clear beyond the reach of controversy that Dreyfus, innocent or guilty, was illegally tried and illegally condemned. Daily News.—'M. Zola's real offence, if he committed any offence at all, is the assertion that Dreyfus was illegally condemned. For that he was not prosecuted. Why not 1 The obvious answer is that M. Zola would have justified his assertion and the Government could not deny it. Standard. — The Government, the President of the Court, and the witnesses for the prosecution, were all united to render justice halt, and deaf as well as blind. Daily Chronicle. — The jury have undoubtedly been influenced by the prevalent opinion in Paris that the army is above the law. Daily Mail. — France drops out of the list of civilised count...
