Domestic Intelligence. MR. MARSHALL'S PAMPHLET. [Newspaper Article] — The Colonist — 21 January 1836

.:M R. MARSHALL'S PAMPHLET. WE have been favoured by a friend with the loain of a pamphlet recently published in London, in consequence of our leading articles on the FIemale Emigration Job, by Mr. John Marshall. It is in the form of a letter to the Rev. Dr. Lang, and, although we have not yet had a mo ment's leisure to peruse it, is, we understand, sufficiently abusive. Whether Mr. Marshall is in the right 'or not 'in ascribing the articles on Female Emigration to Dr. Lang is a matter of comparatively little moment; but we expected every thing in the shape of low abuse ftbr'our services in that particular from Mr. Marshall, to whom we even feel obliged for taking 'such painS to advertise our paper in the British Me tropdlis'. 'As to Dr. Lang, however, when the .Chancellor of the Exchequer found it necessai'y to declare in the House of Commons, in refer ence to newspaper and pamphlet abuse, that he had grown as thick-skinned as the rhinoceros in the Zoological Gardens, and when anot...

TO THE NEWSPAPER.] O E. great characteristic of -modern European monarchies, which distinguishes them from the former feudal ,ones~' is civil- equality, meaning equality before the law, 'so' that persons of all classes are alike amenable 'to the same fribunals, are judged'by 'the same laws, and are subject to the "same penalties,-'that they all bear their share of the taxation, and are all admissible 'to ' the offices'and employments of'the state. This principle is acknowledged and acted upori in miost of the Italian States; and more especially, in the kingdom of Naples, in Austrian Italy; ad in 'iiTuiscany.
