CORRESPONDENCE. "FOLLOW THE KING." TO THE EDITOR OF OUYEN MAIL. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 30 June 1915

, .CORRESPONDE GE. S: " o S"FOLLOW THE KING." TO'1 THE EDITOR OF OU-YEN MAIL. SIR- In your . asune of 18th inst. I notice a .repvly to my. letter of the uprevions week, signed " Etarep nret-" I- am surprised to. see the attltude vou~r correspondent i has. taken esnecialy wthen he uses the words cruel accusations," " intemripet-ate language " and " unciharitab!e observatiori," use of which proves lack of serious thourght upon the subject and.his Spoor grip of the situation." As to his assertion that i classed all who do not see eye to eye with myself as traitor to aheir King and country. I reply it is not a question of- seeing- eye.to eye with me.. but of following, a noble example. I repeat, " Lloyd George says Eng land.'s greatest enemy is strong drink," we find that it was seri ously affecting the ontput of munitions. Fancy 1300 men being away from munition establishments in England the day after Easter Mfonday I. Another yard engaged in the manufacture of submarines bad one-half ...

Glorious Weather. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 30 June 1915

' Glorious Weather. NO DOUBT ABOUr IT. After many' broken promises, Jupiter Pluvius kept his word at lasJt. Drought we have had-such .adrought as we are not likely to -forget for a while. 2ut we can put that behind us now, looking Saround only now and again to keep ii"mirid it is there. After a few spasmodic and tantalising ,fforts, the clouds definitely broke yester day week. The rain came in such a fashion as not been seen or heard for over two years, and ;f you want to argue, we will give you another year in. On Wednesday morning the gauge showed 53 points. Now, in-some parts of the State, that ivould be merely a nhower. but to the Mallee it was the God sent sal vation. Just to make sure there was no error, more rain has fallen almost every day since, and you can't find the man who says things are not good. Men who have haa the nerve wracking and brain de stroying work of water carting for twelve months-and more-are now happy because both stock and domestic supplies have been re ...

Football. TIEGA (7.5) beat OUYEN (3.5). [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 30 June 1915

Football. TIEGA (7.5) beat OuEN (3.5). Something happened members of the Ouyen team on Saturday, as on arrival at Tiega only -1i2 players wvere atailable. Some recruits were impressed and eventually 17 were got into uniform, and one .of these retired at the half-time 'interval. The game needs little description, and the leaders kept their position with a clear lead of 24 points at the final bell. WXILPEUP and AL?IES. TIhrough some confusion, this match was not played. The Allies team was on the Nunga' ground waitingfor the visitors, but it tran spired they only got as far as the Timberoo ground, and expected to meet tIheir opponents there. The umpire was at Nunga, and for-. mally bounced the ball, the Allies pushing the ball forwird and kicked a goal. It is probable the delegates will be called on to decide what's what in this case, and ac cording to that versatile gentleman "The Man in the Street," there's going to be some argument. Next Saturday Ouyen meets Walpeup, and Tiega and ...

An Introduction. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 30 June 1915

T'he Ouyen ail IOs pear .yea. in advance. 12/6 Booked. Published vWednesday Miorning. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1915. An Introduction. This issue of the MAIL introdu ces a new era in its history. That it will also be the prelude to a new era in the history of OGnyen and the great North-Western Mailee, will, we feel certain, find a fervid Amen. In making our bow to the public of this portion of the State, we feel diffident. The great aim and ob ject of a 'ew-spaper should be the bc :t, and consequently the ad vancement, of the district which it caters for. And that is our inten tion. But no one single mind can cort rol those of the majority. Sway the crowd for a time you may; but to hold the crowd de mands more than has been granted any poor human yet. And it is well. If there was no argument, what a mediocre world it would s?o-n become. Race suicide would be a fool to it. But we are out to help, and to do that must get help. This portion of Victoria is-more shame to our Iegisla:trs-rot tr...

Underbool Understandings. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 7 July 1915

Underbool Understandings. SArbor Day was an interesting event. Although no trees were sent by the department, an effort had been made to obtain trees lo cally, and not without success, for a number of pepper trees were given by those interested, and thus a disappointment was avoided. The planting and naming was quite an interesting item; the planters were of a patriotic bent of mind, and named some of the trees after the leaders of the allied naval and military forces. We have now in our midst Lord Kitehener, Sir John French. Admiral Jellicoe, and Gen eral Joffre. mak;ng quite an array of distinguished leaders and men of note. [See that each treehas its tablet so that those of later gener ations may understand.-EDn.] Svrely none will be able to say henceforth that Underbool has not been loyal.to the colors. And sure liy, when the urgent call comes to rally to the flag. UnderbooI wil be the 6irst to respond. [The cal! is made now-read Oliver Wendell Holmes' poem elsewhere in this iss...

State Parliamentary Recruiting Campaign. Men Are Urgently Needed. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 7 July 1915

State Parliamentary Recruiting SCampaign. Men Are Urgently Needed. (Article No. 1_) The war has been raging nearly a year now, and it is apparent that it is no longer a question of the parts of the Empire doing a fair share, but of each part doing the absolute uttermost of. which it is capable. The British race has never shunned the task of being candid with itself, and the time is fully ripe for us in Australia to take stock not only of our perilous position but of our efforts up to the present. The man who still be lieves that something will suddenly occur to change the existing stale mate into victory is living in a fool's paradise; the man who be Iieves that he need not volunteer / because plenty of others are offer ing themselves is gravely miscon struing the forebearance of his acquaintances who do not care openly to tell him their real opinion of him; while the man, be he the highest statesman in the land, who thinks the people are satisfied with the present pace or with any ...
