HEAVY GALE. LOSS OF TWO PILOT BOATS AT THE HEADS. DROWNING OF PILOTS ROBINSON AND REEDER AND FIVE OF THE CREW. DROWNING OF ROBERT GREEN, OF THE SHIPPING BUTCHER'S BOAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 10 August 1867

HEAVY GALE. * LOSS OF TWO PILOT BOATS AT THE HEADS. DROWNING OF PILOTS ROBINSON AND REEDER AND FIVE OF THE CREW. DROWNING OF ROBERT GREEN, OF, THE SHIPPING BUTCHER'S BOAT. Scarcely have the effects of the late dis astrous floods softened down in the public mind, ere it is our painful duty to record a terrible disaster on the return of bois terous weather. On Sunday last, about 9 a.m., a heavy shower of rain fell over the city, and as the day advanced the wind teered round from the north to the south, and at about 4 p.m. it was evident that the night would be a wild one. At that hour the wind began to blow stiffly from the southward, and heavy rain fell, which only abated at distant intervals. The night was very stormy, and heavy gusts of wind, almost reaching the force of a hurri cane, swept over the city. At daylight yesterday morning the gale continued w)m the south, and, as may be supposed, u very heavy sea was rolling in at the Heads, the rain and mist obscuring the horizon. The...

SHOALHAVEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 10 August 1867

SHOALHAVEN. (FftOM OUR COBEESPONDENT.") August 3.—A very strong and influ ential body of our citizens are taking the necessary steps for the re-establishment of a Municipality for the Shoalhaven dis trict, and it is hoped their endeavours may be successful; for though the former corporate body were put to considerable expense, and besides which destroying the end for which a Municipality is es tablished, yet it cannot be denied Muni cipalities are of great benefit to a district. Here we have three towns within a short distance from each. other, and if the boundaries were judiciously made, it is quite clear that a sufficient number of residents would amply contribute to the rates necessary for local and district im provements. The first meeting in refer ence to the above has been held, and I will forward you further particulars as progress be made. The death of Mr. James Graham, the second Mayor of the late Municipality, occurred last week at his estate, Greenhill, where the deceased...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hic est." SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 1868. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 11 January 1868

C|)e Bejja #a*ctte, i '' Quod petls hie est." -SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 1868. The disadvantages resulting from a centralised system of Government are almost innumerable, whether regarded in a political or social sense. The practice of placing unlimited powers in the hands of a few men is not only unwise, but positively injurious to the peoples.interests, and has been found to fetter that wholesome pro gress and reform which is so desirable in every part of the world, be it an empire or insignificant continental palatinate. This fact has been clearly established by past historical events. England can only date her progress from the time the 'powers of the Crown were limited and defined, and the active part of the government of the country placed in the hands of the people. Since the declaration of her independence, America has, under a liberal and comprehensive municipal system, spmA^ up-—mushroom like— from bj^PK a mere colonial possession, place as one of the most. >us and powerful...
