A QUAINT ADDRESS. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 July 1914

A QUAINT ADDRESS. We have read many eloouenl ami touching tributes recently 10 the me mory of the great and good late Queen Victoria, and they have come from all parts of the world. It is sim ple truth to say that the fame of no woman ever reached to such remote corners of the earth as that of Queen Victoria. The Great White Queen was a reality to millions, and during her lifetime she constantly received letters and petitions from the most remote parts of her vast Empire. One of the strangest was that once sent by the pearl-fishers of the Mergui Archi pelago. "To the Empress of India," the doc ument is addressed, "with the bless ings of all the Angels and Archangels, the head of all human creation in the Southern Land, and descendant of a pure race, who rules with power and glory over the land and water ol' this vast Empire." After testifying to the peace and happiness they . had enjoyed under the "benign and assiduous administra tion" of Her Majesty's representative, the people of ...

Cori'esoondence. PLAYING "WITH VITAL INTERESTS. TO TlIS KDITOR. Sir,—The Sonate of tho Commonwealth Ims rejected tho prohibition of tho Pre ference to Unionists' Hill forwarded by the Cook Government, und tho Govornor General lias granted a double dissolution. Tho Commonwealth will be confronted hy this question at the ( lections. Although tl.is bill has been discounted in certain diiections, and tho iuinortanco of tho question has been belittled by a powerful newspapor, still this is ono of the most im portant questions of the times. The Com monwealth is to be asked at the next general election whether as n nation it fully intends to givo away to unionism its civil and religious liberty, for the ono position is dependent upon the other. Unionism under the assumed namu of democracy wishes to turn the Common wealth into a democratic prison. A FRIEND ADVISED HER. The following letter from Mrs. Thomas Brown, of Healesville, Vic., will prove interesting to many of our readers:— "Some time ago I suffered from a severe attack of kidney complaint. The first symptoms were great weak ness and emaciation with terrible pain all over my body, especially across my back. My whole •'body was racked with pain, and I could get but little ease day or night. Medicines were prescribed for me, but failed to do me any good. I cared very little what became of me, I was so weak and miserable. >1 had nearly given up all hope when a friend advised me to try Warner's Safe Cure. I commenced to take it, and derived great 'benefit from taking the contents of the first bottle. I continued to"take the medi cine, getting stronger' and better svery dry. I soon regained my fprmer strength and energy, the pains left me, and I seemed to have a new lease of life. I am now quite strong and happy." A WATCHMAKER'S EPITAPH. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 8 July 1914

A WATCHMAKER'S EPITAPH. | Lieutenant-Colonel Bennett has dis covered among some old papers the test of a curious epitaph, which reads as follows:— "Here lies in horizontal position the outside case of George Routledge, Watchmaker, whose ability in his line w'is an honor to his profession. In tegrity was the mainspring and pru dence the regulator of the actions of 'Us life. Humane, generous, and lib ettil, his hands never stopped till he relieved distress. So nicely balanced were his movements that he never went wrong, except when set agoing "y people who did not know his key. Even then he was easily set right •'gain. He had the art of disposing of "Is time so well that his hours glided way in one continual round of plea sure and delight, till an unlucky min ute put a period to his existence. He departed this life November 14, 1802, a8e 57. Wound up in hopes of being taken by his Maker and of being thor oughly cleaned, reparled, and set go 'ug again in the world to come."

THE BISHOP'S ADVICE. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 8 July 1914

THE BISHOP'S ADVICE. A typical story o£ the Bishop of Ripon, Dr. Boyd Carpenter, i>3 told l>y the Rev. T. Selby Henrey, in "Attic Salt." It nppears that \»hen Mr. Hen rey was in for priest's orders the Bishop gave an afternoon's instruc tion to the candidates on the subject of preaching. His lordship gave his hearers an opportunity of askiug questions, and a deacon said:— "My lord, it has been my habit dur ing my diaconate, after deciding up on a text, to open all my commentar ies on the passage to see what has been written upon it by it he greatest theologians, and thus to poinpose my sermon. Do you recommend me to continue such a method?" To which the bishop replied:—"I must warn you that sucli n metuo'l requires the utmost care, or your ser mon may resemble a patchwork quilt, or, in more Scriptural phrase, 'a coat of many colors.' Take an illustration from a coffee-mill. Suppose you place a number of coffee berries in the mill, they will be disintegrated units with no' cohe...
