FOOTBALL. Last Saturday South Melbourne met Collingwood in a semi-final match on the Melbourne Cricket - ground. There was a large attend ance, and after a good game South Melbourne proved victorious. The scores were : South Melbourne, 12 gis to bhs (82 points). Collingwood, 6 gls 12 bhs (48 points). To-day St. Kilda and Carlton meet in a semi-final on the Melbourne ground. Local enthusiasts are very confident that the Saints will come out on top. If they don't there will be much disappointment. ' Cyole Road Race. | The Dunlop Test Hoad Race, to determ ine the Tasmanian reprtsenta tiveforthe Warrnambool- Melbourne event, to be held on Saturday, 28th September, was decided last Saturday, over a 116 miles course, from Hobart to Launoeston. and resulted in a win for H. A. Barkworth, in receipt of 10 min. siart. The winntr, despite a strong head wind, established a particularly fine pcformance by covering the course in 7 hrs. 13 min. 25 sec., the fastest time recorded during the race. The finish was a very exciting one, Bart* worth only winning by half a wheel from Waddington (22 mins.), Page ran third. The first and third men rode "Dunlops." By his fine ride Bark worth won the right of officially representing Tasmania in the forth coming big Victorian event.

Prahran Dog how. HELD AT PRINCES' COURT. The annual dog show in connec tion with the Prahran Dog and Poultry Society is being held this year at Princes' Court, where, with the extra room and space the condi I lions for the show are of a very desirable character. There is an ex cellent display in all classes, not only Victorian fanciers being well repre sented, but there are many competi tors from other States. The show has been well attended, and much interest displayed in the exhibits, from the big and sturdy bulldog specimens down to the toy varieties. The show will be opened this after noon, and will be brought to a conclusion this evening.

Federal Election Expenses. Judgment was on Thursday delivered by the High Court, consisting oí five judges, upon an order to review argued last week relating to a claim for issuing election circulars. Thomas W. Haweis, of Newry-street, Windsor, sued Mr J. Miller, of Chapel-street, in the Court of Petty Sessions at Prahran, claiming £15 for work done in issuing and distributing circulars for the defendant, who was a candidate at the last election for the House of Representatives. An order was made for the amount claimed, and an order to review was obtained by the defendant raising the question whether the statutory bar against suing for election work contained in the Victorian Constitution Amend ment Act was not applicable to federal elections. Mr Barrett (instructed by Mr Claude Lowe) ap peared for the complainant, and Mr Arthur (instructed by Messrs Maddock and Jamieson) for the defendant.
