TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 15 October 1909

TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE S?ANDARD. Dear Sir,--Thu Quixotic-I hail almost written idlitic--pruposal of ." The Cad " supported by Moderato Gnzzlor " could e.siyd bu treated with the contempt it do. eel vo, worn, it not for the fact that it in directly casts a. reflootton upon our coun cillors- in wlheso hands the whole thing shou!d he left. The cheap sneers an] asinine alliteration of " The Ca" requile no comment. It is to be hoped' our public men will not be, inflneceod by such clap. trap. Is it reason able to suppose that men who pass their lives in the company of the Commonwealth's brainiest politicians are coming hero to be entertained by " kiddies ? " Not` they. Despite "The Cdl's" " guzzle and gorge" idiocy they enjoy a good dinner followed by academical speeches and this is at all times a sufficiency. Yours, etc., GORGER.

The energetic and pains takings secretary, Miss Mitchel, is to be com plimented on the manner in which all the arr-angements were made and carried out. The pro grammreo was a lengthy one, sonu, of the artists having journeyed from Yea, Alexan dra and enrrounnling districts to render aesistance which speaks well for the popue. larity of members of the club. Thornton Tramway, :stRVEY STARTS ON MONDAY: The President of the Shire (Cr John" Wylie, J.P.) has had a busy time since his appointment, and is preparing himself for a continuance for some time to come. ' The trouble in connection with the appointment of an engineer and secretary, the opening of the railway, the "ziz-zag" across the park corner, the Thornton tram, the Thornton deviation, the pro. posed reverting into ridings, and numerons other demands, is sufficient to keep the president going for some time. It is not the first time that Councillor Wylie bha held the resna of office and notwithstand= ing this extra rush of business, he will acquit himself to the satisfaction of all. Narrow Escape; CRUSHED IN THE RAILWAY TURNTABLE, Harold Ward, aged 9 years, son of Mr T. Ward, of Alexandra, had a narrow escape from a teirible death, on Sunday last. It appears a number of children were amusing themselves in the after. noon, by riding on the turntable now in course of construction near the railway station, and although a number of adults were watching proceedings not one ven tured to purseaade them of the dangerous natore of the game they were carryingon'. Seated on the ponderous iron girders the' children were carried round the pit at a great pace and it was while the machinery was in motion that young Ward slipped off. Falling between the swift revolving girders and the slopping bank or side of the pit, he was caught and dragged round for some considerable distance. With some difficulty the girtlde Was stopped.' It' was found' on extricating Ward that he was seriously injured. Taken to his home, Dr. Johnson was in attendance and pronounced the case as serious. N...

Snake Bite. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 October 1909

Snake Bite. A young man named Whitelaw, son of   a farmer residing at Acheron, was brought into Alexandra on Tuesday afternoon last, suffering from the effects of snake bite. Whitelaw was out riding on horseback mustering cattle and while passing through some thick tussocks, was bitten on the leg above the ankle. With great presence of mind he dismounted, and after satisfying himself that he had been bitten, the punctures being quite discern- able, he released the laces from his boots and tied two ligatures one above the knee, the other below. He then mounted his charge and galloped home. On arrival, his father made an incision with a keen razor and injected the usual snake-bite remedy which was supplied by a neighbor. Whitelaw was then conveyed to Alex- andra and accommodated at the Sham- rock Hotel. Mr Wheeler was called in and attended the case. At midnight the patient was out of danger. The Railway Commissioners notify in another colunn that no more sleepers will be...

Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.] TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. SIR,-Will you kindly allow me space in your valuable paper to expose the actions of some paltry thieves, residing in Alexandra, who have not only lost all self-respect but have no respect for the feelings of those who respect their dead by decorating their graves and planting flowers thereon, in the local cemetery. It appears that when these ghonlish theives wish to decorate their mantlepieces or replenish their flower gar- den they go to the cemetery and strip graves of vases and flowers for that pur- pose. Two of these thieves are well-known to me. One has on his mantle a vase taken off my brother's grave which is easily identi- fied, and the other was seen to enter the cemetery empty-handed and emerge with a bundle of certain flowers; same as was missed from the above grave that very day, and same as was planted in her garden the following day. Alexandra at Ballarat. Miss Gladys Stillman, who has of late pleased so many residents of the shire with her excellent singing, appeared at the South Street competitions ro,:ontly, and although not one of the selected two, acquitted her self very satisfactorily. It was not with the certainty of obtaining first or any prizes that this young lady entered into the com petitions, but solely for the pleasure of knowing and hearing. We compliment bliss Stillman on her pluck. The class for which she ontered numbered 32, and she was the first called upon to face the vastaudienco Her hearers gave the lass from the moun tains a hearty reception. She again ap peared and although unplaced received hearty congrg&ulations from many admirors.
