Municipal Council. [Newspaper Article] — The Cobar Herald — 14 October 1899

Municipal Council. The usual meeting of the Cobar Municipal Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present: Aldermen Snelson (Mayor), James, Kin- kead, Bailey, Musgrove and Duffy. Mr Cornish wrote asking for the alignment of the streets of East Cobar. It was decided, on the motion of Alder- men James and Kinkead, to intimate to Mr Cornish that as the work would cost about £100 the Council could not see its way to comply with the request. The secretary of the Parliamentary stand- ing committee on Public Works wrote, stating that the Committee would be here on Monday next. He asked that the Mayor do his best to obtain witnesses. Ald James said he did not think the railway line would pay axle grease. It was decided that the Mayor should attend to the matter, and advertise, so that probable witnesses would know. The monthly report of the Inspector of Slaughtering Places was read. A letter was received notifying that Thursday, 12th October, was a public holi- day. The Aldermen authorised...

Member's Work. Mr Spence has received the follow- ing reply from the Chief Electoral Officer:— '' In reply to your letter of the 5th instant, I beg to inform you that I am unable toacccede to your re-   quest to appoint a Deputy Electoral Registrar at Wrightville to meet the convenienoe of the residents of the Municipality of Gladstone. The lo- cality named is within the boundaries of the Cobar division of the Cobar electorate, the officer empowered to issue rights for such division being located at Cobar, and the Parliamen- tary and Electorates and Elections Act of 1893 only empowers the appoint- ment of one Deputy Registrar for each division. The difficulty might be overcome by the officer at Cobar visit- ing the locality for the purpose of is- suing rights on a date to be notified. Mr W. SANDER AND SONS EUCALYPTI EXTRACT According to reports of a great number of physicians of tho highest professional standing, there are offored Eucalypti Extract, which possess no curative qualities. In protection of the world wide fame of Sandbk and Sons' preparation we publish a few abstracts t'roiu these reports, wt ' oh bear fully out that no reliance can oe placed in other iroducts:— Dr. W. B. Euah, Oakland, -al., writes. It is sometimes difficult to obtain the genuine article (Sander and Son's.) I employed different other pre parations, they had no therapeutic value no bad effects. In one case the effects woro similar to the oil camphora, the objectionable action of which is wol known.' Dr. H. B. Drake, Portland Oregon, says — ' Since I bocamo acquaint ed with this preparation (Sander and Sons) I used no other form of eucalypti as^I think it is by far the best.' Telegrams. Friday. [Newspaper Article] — The Cobar Herald — 14 October 1899

Telegrams. Friday. Bishop -Green, of Grafton and     Armidale has expressed the desire to   accompany the New South Wales contingent to the Transvaal. Considerable excitement existed at the opening wool sales at Melbourne. Prices show an advance of about 40 per cent, as compared with last year, being unprecedented in the history of the colony. Cranberry has been scratched for all Caulfield engagements. General French has expressad the opinion that it will be Christmas be- fore the British forces reach Johan- nesburg. Mr Wise, speaking at Ashfield last night, said the Government would adhere to its determination not to take any steps in regard to the de- spatch of troops until parliamentary   approval was obtained. Two girls, aged 16 and 8, were drowned in a dam at their residence near Canowindra. Egypt shows a tendency to harden, Scorn is slightly a better favorite than Lancaster for the Derby; Cranberry is   a shade f...

The Department of Mines. [Newspaper Article] — The Cobar Herald — 14 October 1899

The Department of Mines. The annual report of the Depart- ment of Mines is to hand at last. It is a very voluminous document, and in it the Minister (Mr J. Cook) gives detailed information relating to the various branches of the industry: — ' The aggregate value of the mineral products of the colony to the end of 1898 is estimated to be £127,894,852 8s 10d. The value of such mineral products for the year was £1,860,977 1 6s 7d— a net increase of £1 88,728 2s 6d upon the valuo of the minerals won in 1897. The largest increases are in gold, silver, and coal ; and the de creases in silver, lead, flux, limestone, copper, tin and opal The decreases in these minerals are in no way due to the depletion of our deposits. The severe drought which affected all parts of tho colony during the year under review very seriously hampered all classes of mining, and it is very satis factory i'. view of the difficulties our mining population had to contend against from this cause that our operations co...
