THE ROMANTIC SIDE OF BUILDING CATALOGUES Take Malley's, For Example [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 29 October 1930

THE ROMANTIC SIDE OF BUILDING CATALOGUES Take Malley's, For Example Most members of the building world imagine that when they leave their office, job or works, they put business matters away from their - mind' until next day. They are mistaken. The familiarity, research and general interest, as sociated with building matters, predisposes lis to take a general interest in building and its many side issues. 1AJ pamphlet issued by Malleys Ltd. of Moun tain Street, Sydney, showing pictures of 14 forms of ventilation, of many and varied sys tems, sets one wondering in the small hours of morning' what happened in the last century when ventilation was neither known nor valued. Now this firm finds it worth while to specialise in all these methods, some of which o'mly cost a few pence. Surely mankind benefits by such provision, as to live in a healthy atmo sphere must benefit us body, soul and pocket. Some of these provisions were in the ridge capping, or the walls: some were inducts and the...

THE BUILDING HEIGHT LIMIT [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 29 October 1930

THE BUILDING HEIGHT LIMIT A special conference was held in the Town Hall yesterday and discussed the limitation of the height of buildings in Sydney. The dele gates consisted of representatives of the Master Builders' Association, institute of Architects, Fire Underwriters' Association, the Water and Sewerage Board and the- City Council. For some ti^ie past it has been realised amongst architects, engineers and master builders that there is much room for 'improve ment and reorganisation of these regulation's. In the last issue of 'Building' (October) we state two cases of recently completed' city buildings, viz., the B.M..A. Building and Stan ton House, where the rigid adherence to the Height of Buildings Acts at present ? existing has not only caused considerable worry- to the architects and builders, but also has re sulted in unfortunate results which could have been eliminated had a little more^ tolerance and discretion been exercised on the part ,pf those administering these reg...

WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH ASBESTOS A Simple Subject with Real Results [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 29 October 1930

WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH ASBESTOS A Simple Subject with -Real Results The dictionary tells us that, asbestos is', a fibrous variety of horn blende, separable into flexible filaments- of flax-like appearance and silky lustre, and possessing tlie property of being incombustible. The man. inv the street is more interested in the last statement, whilst literature issued by Bell's Asbestos Australian Agency gives us a lot of facts to bear this out. 'Viceroy' celluiar sectional cpvering is used to cover round steam and hot water pipes as a non-conductor of heat and is strong, clean, neat and easily applied. 'Viceroy' flat sheets are about 6ft. by 3ft. and of any required thickness and are used for insulating the underside of ship's decks and baker's- ovens and other- places. 'Bell-buoy' asbestos composition is supplied dry iii 1 cwt. bags, and is used for' lagging steam pipes, etc. v s In every instance the- attractivie features are that the material* is non-conductive, is cheap and easily a...

WOOD PIPES Proof of Efficiency and Economy [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 29 October 1930

WOOD PIPES Proof of Efficiency and Economy It is gratifying to note how Australian-made Wood Pipe is proving its great efficiency and definite economy under actual service condi tions in Australia. At a rccent meeting of the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Sydney,   the Board's Chief Engineer, Mr. Haskins, stated that wood stave pipes made here from Australian Karri stood 300 lb. pressure to the square inch without leakage. Australian manu facturers had invented galvanising for steel binding wire for the pipes that no test could damage. The Board has placed an order with the Australian Wood Pine Co. Ltd., Lane Cove. N.S.W.. for over £9000 worth of "Pioneer" Wood Pipes to be used in connection with the Sutherland-Cronulla (N.S.W.) water supply.
