UPPER JDELOlfO. . (feom our correspondent.) Jantjaby 8th. — Bush-fireac are now raging in almost every direction and have done consi derable damage. Mr. A. Watson o,f this place, and Mr. J. Callaway, of R-*dy Flat, have Mid a great portion of their fencing destroyed, and the grass for miles 'around has been consumed. It is presumed that fires have, been wantonly lighted in[ various directions to prevent ownen- of sheep from bringing them hither. Assuming this to) be the case, the incendiaries will themselves ibo great sufferers, as the only food for cattle, -tc, is now com pletely destroyed, and must necessarily occasion an advance in the price of butcher's meat, which, under existing circumstances, will be a tax difficult to be borne by those who (ire now, suffering from scarcity of water to work thettj claims. -. It is to be hoped that accident ancR carelessness have been the cause. I have noticed that many men after lighting their, pipes have'n habit of throwing away the match re...

NEWS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 23 January 1869

NEWS OF THE WEEK. We have inspected two 'very neatly drawn plans of cottages executed by Mr. H. Maynard, carpenter and builder, who has lately settled in Gundagai.' One is fora simple but elegant detached house, the other for a double two storied residence. Both are well designed, but the latter appears especially to combine the requisites of good internal accommodation and exterior aspect, with Economy of space, and cheapness ' of construction. It is satisfactory.. : to learn tlkt we have in our locality one who can not only draw tasteful plans of houses,- But who is also' com petent to carry out all details of buildings 'he undertakes. , We hope Mr. Maynard may find ample employment in his .vocation; and ' can truly affirm that in no place are a few commodious residences more required than in Guudagai.. ;It is one very great disadvantage and drawback to the township that there is at present literally no accommodation for persons desiring to take up their residence in it. To camp o...

At the ttsnal fortnightly meeting of the Sydney ? Munioipnl Council, on Monday last, Messrs. H. H. Smithew and Murphy were appointed clerks of works for the city. . On the 13th inst., n firo took place nt Elm cottage, Oura, the residence of Mr. W. Band, which resulted in the total destruction of the cottage and all it contained. Last week an inquest was held at Albury on the body of Augusts Mkhaelis, aged forty four years, a native of Hamburg. It appeared that tho deceased had been an intemperate man for some time past, and that he had shot himself through the head whilst in a state of temporary insanity, caused by drink. A verdict to this effect was returned by the jury. On tho 15th instant a cyclone passed over the Lower Clarence, sweeping away the new Anglican place of worship, All Saints' church, at Lawrence, and two barns. The parsonage was inucu damaged. It also destroyed the verandah of the post-office, and roofing of Curry's receiving stores. Stables were demolished, and lar...
