Persons of those two antagonistic portions of society are frequently thrown into intimate, fellowship and association with each oilier, especially while travelling on the steamers of the Southern and Western wa ters. Some years since, a number of gamblers, with two or three clergymen, happened to he among the passengers on board of a steamboat bound from Cincinnati to New Orleans. The company on board was numerous; bul as something uncommon and extraordinary, there was liltle or no gambling practiced by the passengers on the trip downward. Several days hadpassed in this way, when a gambler, a wild, reckless, dart-devil sort of a character, began lo grow impatient of the tedium of the voyage, and anxious for a chance 'of making his passage money by victimizing some of the "green ones" fn the crowd.
