Captain Coverly was passing the night at White Horse Inn on his way to Gen . • Arnold with important dispatches . At midnight Sal he Campbell , hearing a grating noise from the public room of the tavern , as though the safe were being broken into , goes down stairs , pistol in hanil , to investigate . Opening the door she is confronted by Legrnnd—Silver lox— -in the role-of a burglar . One thing is , sure , no one Is going to pay you more than you ask and no one conscientiously can ask more than an article is worth . ItetteKfjfiom { BK 5 V Goodwill to ter / ¥ iend Btfrtbz ^ Home , May 1 , 1907 . My Dear Bertha : . What cold weather we have had ! One certainly does not feel the need of summer dresses with snow on the ground , yet as we always have had warm weather in summer I have faith to believe we will this year if we wait long enough . I am going right on with my sewing as fast as I can . I watched the papers for salos and by taking advantage of these succeeded in procuring some lovely thin goods at almost half price . We each have one new dress—the rest are made over . I always look everything over and some times find two articles can be combined to imak \ e one as good as new . Others simply need a little new lace or cmbroidery to make a pretty and serviceable garment . I presume these little economies seem strange to you who have only had yourself to plan for , but you will find you will be obliged to plan closer now with four to dress . By all means make over anything suitable for the chi...

We and the Weather [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

We and the Weather BY MILTON 0 . NELSON . I have heard men sny that farming is the greatest game nf chance ever played by any man ; that while there Is reason In It and possibilities in It , that there is nothing , nearer certainty in It than possibilities ; and that the possibilities of loss are greater than the possibilities of profit . Looked at from this point of view , farming is a dismal job . The element of chance comes into the making of every kind of a legitimate living . You cant get away from risk . The farmer surely has his share of risks . His fortune is open on all sides and on top to the mercy of the elements . He has to trust to the , Power that runs the universe for his annual crop . He can call this Power luck or Providence , as he likes , but lie will like it bettor and his luck . will be better If he calls it Providence and acts as though he believed it . A farmer by taking heed can get a line on the elements of his soil . Ho can know to a , practical fraction wh...

Clubs for Farmer ' s Wives . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

Clubs for Farmer s Wives . BY ADA CARROLL WOHTMAN . The Faillnml Country Woman s Club is not a fad , nor a transient organization , but the permanent outgrowth of the conditions surrounding the life of a farmers wife . It was organized in 1301 . with a charter membership of twcnty-flvo . It WHS something of an experiment at its organization , but its membership and its influence have grown and strengthened , until now it is n lending force in the social and intellectual life of the community . It had a great deal of prejudice to overcome , and it had to convince the public at largo that it was meant for an equalizing factor among the farmers wives , but we feel that ft has accomplished liolh these ! objects . The enthusiasm with which it was received by the farmers wives themselves is sufficient excuse for Its existence . We were fortunate In securing the aid of two leading members of the women s club in our market town , to start our organization , but for those who cannot seeiiro ...

AFTER TWO YEARS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

AFTER TWO YEARS . With this number The Farmer s Wife begins its third year under the present management . And , looking back over these two years of effort toward bringing greater happiness , comfort and prosperity into farm homes , though it is difficult to measure such achievement , yet with many letters comdng in in every mail voicing appreciation of its work along different lines , and the many others that bring large additions daily to our subscription list , we cannot but . feel pleased with the measure of success attained , and encouraged to go on improving our paper and making it helpful and useful to its patrons . We wish to be regarded intimately , as a real friend of every farmers wife , to whom she can bring her troubles and ask for help and encouragement , and through which , out of her experience , she may freely offer help and sympathy to others . Beside writing the kindly letters that are our greatest reward , our friends may give us practical help in the business wo...

OUR COUNTRY SCHOOLS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

OUR COUNTRY SCHOOLS . The success of the consolidated country schools , wherever the experiment has been made , seems to present the best solution yet worked out for the question , how shall the children residing upon farms be given equal educational advantages with those whose homes are in the towns and cities . The first consolidated school was opened In an Ohio township in 1893 , and proved so satisfactory that the movement quickly spread into the adjoining central states where hundreds of townships have now consolidated schools , not all of which , however , are centralized , though the consolidated school is made the central and only school in the township where possible , when the township is 5 or G miles square . In larger townships , or those that are long and narrow , more than one school is necessary because of the time required for transporting pupils from the extreme limits to a central point . Thus far the one objection to the centralized school is the early hour at whi...

THE STRENGTH OF SILENCE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

THE STRENGTH OF SILENCE . Every human heart craves sympathy , and the first impulse of most natures when disappointment , sorrow , or adversity of any kind comes is to give expression to the suffering that is so hard to bear and seek the comfort of confiding in a friend . The sympathy thus sought and given may help to bear the bitterness or pain for the time , but , unless it is the pain of loss by death , the later memory of having revealed the innermost nature thus to anyone is more likely to cause regret than be productive of lasting comfort . Thy friend has a friend , and thy friend s friend a friend , so that what is told In confidence is apt to be repeated in confidence , and while the sympathy of the friend was sweet at the time , to become the object of universal pity is not pleasant , nor to feel that the heart s deepest feeling has become the subject of more or less common talk , Every outpouring of the heart lessens one s individuality , strength of character and self res...

A WORD FOR CO-OPERATION . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

A WORD FOR CO-OPERATION . Co-operation is the subject of talk among intelligent , progressive , farseeing farmers In ail parts of the United States today . The prevailing sentiment is that farmers , in order to put their business on a paying basis , will have to organize and co-operate , at least far enough to control the movement of their crops so that the regular market or consumptive demand shall be supplied and never oversupplied . Grant that it is virtually lm- # possible for the farmers to distribute their wheat , oats , corn , rye . potatoes , fruits , vegetables and other products , it still remains true that it is easily possible for them to hold back enough of their crops , of the long-keeping kinds especially , to prevent the glutting of the markets at harvest time . Without the regular annual harvest glut , prices would not sink to the ruinous low levels of the past few years . Holding back the grain , cotton , tobacco , hay . fruils and vegetables is possible , and it i...

HEART AND HOME TALKS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1907

HEART AND HOME TALKS . There is no lightoner of toil like that of cultivating a love for the work that must be done in the home by associating with it the thought of the results to be obtained : A cheerful , happy home , the dearest spot on earth . Appetizing , wholesome meals . that arc both enjoyable and strengthening , fitting the body for its necessary activities and the brain for consecutive thought and study , the formation of high ideals , mid mapping out the course to be pursued to attain them . The mental attitude of the worker dignifies and ennobles the work and enables her to perform the most menial tasks easily and cheerfully . Keeping in mind the idea that the many monotonous daily tasks are a part of the desirable whole which makes a comfortable , happy home for the family , a pleasant gathering place for friends and neighbors , a haven of refuge if but for the night to many a chance guest or weary traveler , will surely make the daily routine that is so necessary to h...
