Reports from tke FanMsmhtfa [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1915

Reports from tke FanMsmhtfa EXPERIMENT STATIONS A Valuable New Crop from Japan A plant immigrant from Japan that seems likely to prove a most desirable addition to American agriculture is the adsuki bean , which has been successfully grown on the Government s farm at Arlington , Va ., and at many other places . Its most valuable feature lies in its large yield of seed . Owing to its texture , the bean is easily ground into meal or flour and has proven far superior to any other bean for that purpose . Its flavor is delicate and it lacks any objectionable beany taste . The adsuki bean is a most popular food in Japan and there seems no reason why a food so rich in protein should not become popular in the United States . The average yield per acre of the best varieties of the adsuki bean at the Government s farm has been about 25 bushels . The bean is a summer annual , requiring the same climatic conditions as the common bean . The plants are bushy in habit , growing from V / i to 2 fee...

Autographic Kodak Date and title your negative ! permanently , when yon make the exposures . p * VERY negative that is worth making is worth a date and a title . In business fanning , with every picture that you take of stock and crops , and machinery and buildings , you can write valuable data permanently on the negative . The places you visit—interesting dates and facts about the children , their age at the time the pictures were made—the autographs of friends you photograph—these notations add to the value of every picture you make . Just release a stop and a door opens ia the back of the Kodak : wri t * whatever notation you went ; expose from 1 to 5 seconds ; dose the door and you sre ready for tbe nest exposure . On tbe margins between the negatives will appear a permanent photographic reproduction of the notation you made . It is not s psrt of the Autographic plan te reproduce this ia the print but that it simply be preserved si a permanent record on the negative . It it obvi...

miMi [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1915

miMi The Selection of a Breed By Will Corbin The advantages in securing pure-bred poultry are too great to bear of discussion . Pedigree and breeding count just as much with chickens as with horses and cattle , and in some ways , are even more essential . Standard breeds have the advantage of being uniform in size , type and color and will also give more and larger eggs than mongrels or scrubs . This is only natural as the better breeds are the result of many years of careful selecting and mating on the part of the poultrymen who make a business of breeding the pure-bred stock . They require , too , no more work or care than the more humble varieties and cost no more to keep . _ The choice of breeds is wide and each has its champions . Roughly they are classed in two great divisions—the Mediterranean and Asiatic , though cross-breeding has since developed a distinctly American hen that is regarded as superior , in some ways , to either of the original stocks . For the man who intend...

irom Farm Manures in Winter [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1915

irom Farm Manures in Winter . ( Conciuaea page oj dissolve all the ammonia gas and prevent further destruction by combustion . . ..... Liquid manure by itself is disagreeable to put on the soils ; but whet used in connection with the solids , th « disagreeable part is eliminated , as botr may be handled with the fork . A concrete container is one of the handiest of contrivances and yet the most valuable for conserving the fertilizing constituents of manures . The bottom should be water-tight , as also the sides , but the latter do not have to b < very tight , depending somewhat upor the size of the bin . This bin may bt built next to the barn in order to sav < labor in handling the manure , bul not where it will be flooded from unspouted roofs . When we consider the great expense connected with the purchase of nitrogenous , commercial fertilizers and thc likelihood of shortage in potash fertilizers due to the European crisis , it standi us well in hand to conse...

IIK IVE ^ TOCK : MB ?/ ^^ [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1915

IIK IVE ^ TOCK : MB ?/ ^^ Feed Cottonseed Meal to Beef Cattle Because of the abundant supply of cottonseed meal there is likely to be in this country this year , specialists in the Department of Agriculture believe that the farmer has a better opportunity to make money by feeding beef cattle than for some years past . The feeding value of cottonseed meal has been recognized by agricultural authorities for some time and large quantities of it are exported annually to Europe , where the farmers , especially those in Denmark , are also aware of its usefulness . Two causes combine to lower the price of cottonseed by-products . In the first place , the cotton crop in the South this year is good , and in the next the foreign markets have been seriouly interfered with by the European war . This situation has already resulted in a substantial drop in the price of cottonseed by-prod-ucts . Cottonseed meal can now be bought in the South at prices ranging from $ 22 to $ 24 per ton , instead of...
