Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 9 July 1898

Garden and Orchard Wise Words from Horticulturists Whatever may be thought of the results of using barn-yard manure and farm composts in practice , especially throughout our best apple regions ,, little can be done . If the soil needs enriching , or needs more humus to . better the physical consistency , we must generally find some-other way of meeting the heeds . This can be done in a feasible way by plowing under green crops . Very much has been said of late in regard to the efficiency of leguminous plants as soil fertilizers , and their value for this purpose is now recognized by up-to-date farmers and horticulturists . Red clover has long been used and still has a high place among these fertilizing crops , but cow peas and soja beans are bidding now for prominence . These latter cannot fully take the place of the former in all cases , since they are annuals , requiring reseeding each year . On the other hand this characteristic better fits them for orchard purposes , when an ear...

live Stock and Dairy Fattening Range Lambs This paper is a summary of the facts presented in Bulletin No . 57 , Section 3 , issued recently by the Minnesota University Experiment Station . It has been prepared with a view to meet the needs of the agricultural press . The experiment began on November 1 , 1897 , and ended February 28 , 1898 . The lambs were sent to the block on March 11 th . The preparatory feeding continued seven days . The experiment proper lasted 112 days , and the whole period of feeding covered 131 % days . Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 9 July 1898

Poultry and Bees Success with Chicks The chicks in The Farmers voice flock are doing splendidly . Not a single one that came out of the shell by its own efforts has been lost , and but one that has been hatched has died and that one was helped out to save its life . These chicks have not had a bit of animal feed of any kind except such bugs and worms as they found in the garden and on the range they have to run over . They never have had a single meal of soft feed of any kind nor has their feed ever been moistened or fixed up in any way . For several years we have been getting farther and farther away from the feeding of sloppy or even damp feed to young chickens and this year gave it up entirely with some misgivings , but the result shows that it is useless to mix feed for chicks at any age . Beginning with steel cut oats and going from that to wheat and cracked corn and a little oats , the chicks have grown very rapidly and have been perfectly healthy from the first . We noticed t...

On Wednesday the senate passed the Newlands resolution by a vote of 42 to 21 , and with the president s signature annexation is completed , save for the necessary formalities attending the actual transfer . We have felt that the annexation of Hawaii was a serious mistake ; now that it is accomplished we trust that honor and wisdom may prevail and the action just taken redound to the countrys highest good . The resolutions provide that the land laws of the United States shall apply to the islands , and that until congress makes further provisions the civil , judicial and military government shall be in the hands of persons appointed by President McKinley , Vho is empowered to select five commissioners , two of whom shall be residents of Hawaii , to recommend to congress legislation for the islands . The Farmers' Forum [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 9 July 1898

The Farmers Forum The farmers Forum invites communications on all subjects from whatever point ot view , the editor of THEVOIOE assuming no responsibility whatever for the ideas expressed . THE DUTY OF MOTHERS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 9 July 1898

THE DUTY OF MOTHERS . Daughters Should be Carefully Guided in Early Womanhood . My health became so poor that I had to leave school . I was tired all the time , and had dreadful pains in my Bide and back . I was also troubled with irregularity of menses . I was very weak , and lost so much flesh that my friends became alarmed . My mother , who is a firm believer in your remedies from experience , thought perhaps they might benefit me , and wrote you for advice . I followed the advice you gave , and used Lydia E . Pinkham a Vegetable Compound and Liver Pills as you directed , and am now as well as I ever was . I have gained flesh and have a good color . I am completely cured of irregularity . What suffering frequently results from a mother s ignorance ; or more frequently from a mother s neglect to properly instruct her daughter ! Tradition says woman must suffer , and young women are so taught . There is a little truth and a great deal of exaggeration in this . If a young woman suff...
