thr Const It nt lon ! [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 November 1849

thr Const It nt lon ! The thirteenth day of October, in the year 184!*. was one of tho»e eventful e|iochs in the history of California which will cvei be u day of remembrance aud interest— the beginning of a new era ! It wan a day of beauty and sunshine. The sun rose in all his might, and as lie went higher and higher in the heavens the ocean mist that hung lazily upon the pleasant town of Monterey, and seemed dallying softly with the plaeid waters of the lovely buy, gradually shrunk from his amorous embrace, until it bad rolled up the hill-sides, and died away, leaving its last kiss upon the crests of the stately pines. And as the day grew brighter aud hotter, h balmy breer.e swept gently past—so gentle that it did not ripple the quiet waters—so cool that it seemed to soothe and calm all unworthy and restless desires—and yet so potent that it filled tin' mind with great thoughts that appeared to have been called into being by the softened booming of tlic mighty breakers of the Paci...

Latest from the Placet*. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 November 1849

Latest from the Placet*. I'ideas the weather speedily grants a respite, we shall venture to "ring down the curtain" on the Drama of the iSaldm Fartaer "for the season" ending with November. The winter rains and the worn roads have together impeded travel to such an extent as will entirely cut off communication between the Placer section of couutry and tlic valley settlements for the ensuing six weeks, if not for the "balance of the season" ending in April — Thenceforward, after the "winterof our discontent" shall have merged into the "merry month of May," there will be a greater amount of profitable labor accomplished, then the present year has witnessed ; a conclusion which is amply justified by present indications. I 'poll the opening of spring will also commence facilitated communication, by means, we trust at the disposal of the post-of-fice agent iu this country. We shall also be enabled to present to the readers of the Attn California more efficient and satisfactory mining inf...

The Aclmi**ion of California, ' In tho history of the licpubllc of the l'nitod Suites there has not probably occurred heretofore an event of *o much political importance as the admission of the now State of Cnlifornia into the national confederacy The advent of a new ' State, and her demand for adwiaiiiuu. is not a novelty in itself, for it has occurred seventeen ' times since the formation of the Constitution hut ' the peculiar and extraordinary circumstances under which thu new Statu of California claims admission, anil the great results likely to (low 1 from such admission, arc equal in magnitude to the combined importance of the whole seventeen ' admitted before her. The Vote of the State. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 November 1849

The Vote of the State. Knough is known to determine conclusively the result of the late Election in this country, hi far us the success of the State Constitution, the choice of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and probably of Representative!! to Congress are concerned .we have next to learn—and the issue ic fraught with interest—what is the strength 0 I the vote cast. To the extent which our returns up to the present time enable us to form an opinion, it it established beyond a shadow of doubt that a minority only of the total number of voters in tin Districts heard from is represented by the officiu and unofficial returns. For instance, the Pis triet of Sacramento (taking the vote on the Con stitution as an aggregate,) polled five thousand six hundred and five votes, which may be pui down us scarcely amounting to one-fourth the number of electors which the district contains The San Joaquin vote wiff fall us far short ofai entire representation, and tho Districts of Sono nia ami San ....
