Levinson to be cited as ‘man of the year’ Robert Levinson, a Boyle Heights basketball star in the thirties who now is president and chairman of the board of Hoffman Bros. Packing Co. at 2731 S. Soto St., has been selected as “Man of the Year” by the Ida Mayer Cummings Auxiliary of the Jewish Homes for the Aged of Greater Los Angeles. The award will be presented for his longtime support of many worthy causes at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, in the Beverly Hilton at the auxiliary’s 51st annual ball. Chairman of the honorary dinner committee is Adolph Weinberg, chief of the Coast Grain Co. and a former auxiliary “Man of the Year” because of the half-century of support given the Jewish aged by his family. Free tax service available Supervisor Ed Edleman has announced that a free personal income tax preparation service for low-income, senior citizen, and non-English-speaking taxpayers is available at more than twenty locations in the Third Supervisorial District. Edelman said the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service at over 500 locations throughout Southern California, also provides volunteers to assist shutins and the hearing impaired. The toll-free nubmer to call for the location of the nearest VITA Center is 1-800-242-4585. Citizens also may call their local IRS office. Edelman added that taxpayers intending to take advantage of the free tax service should remember to bring with them to the Centers all W-2 forms, IRS tax packages which they received in the mail, and any other necessary tax documents.
