TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH 12, 1850 t rmrt> tl' • [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 12 March 1850

TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH 12, 1850 t rmrt> tl' • We do not possess information of ground hating been appropriated for the highly necessary purpose of Cemeteries, either If individuals or by the town of San Francisco, nevertheless wo cannot resist the belief that the matter should receive the attention of our citizens. During the winter a large number of deaths . havo occurred, and but the burial ground near the north beach has proved available fur interment. A visit to this place, of sepulture is sufficient to shock the sensibilities of men inured even to tho battle-field rudo burial of tho dead. The ground is not enclosed, the graves nre heedlessly preparod, without regard to order or caution, and there is every appearance of indecent haste having been resorted to in the several in- i terments. If the town of San Francisco, by the rascally perversion of that power which has rested in the hands of her numerous alcaldes, is now destitute of a plot of ground for a decent place...

LOCAL MATTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 12 March 1850

LOCAL MATTERS. Olympic Amphitheatre — We rsgret to announce that the proprietors of this establishment have felt themselves compelled to discontinue their theatrical performances for the present. Disaffection and a want of harmony in the company, for which actors are known all the world over, has induced them to adopt this course. The smallness of the company and the consequent difficulty of presenting any great variety of pieces precluded the possibility of giving tho public that novelty which they must have before they will be»tow a liberal patronage upon a theatre. The inducements held out to the proprietors wore such as to warrant them in making a very heavy outlay for the production of theatrical entertainments, and now after overcoming the greatest difficulties, they find themselves in the vocative by the desertion of a portion of their company and the apathy of others, who cannot see that in Union there is strength, and that the general good of the common weal would imperativ...
