NOVEMBER 1983 ^ fa. Southwest Chinese Journal Page 13 An American Professor In China: Teach and Learn HOW Oil; /\EEy®U m & 'i m fiov/otr myov? The following article was excerpted from a magazine story written by Prof. Donald M. Murray during his teaching appointment in the People's Republic of China. Donald M. Murray is an English professor at Northern Illinois University. He taught in China at the Xian Foreign Languages Institute in the People's Republic of China during the 1980-81 academic year. On loan from an American university, I'm teaching Englis...

Southwest Chinese Journal THE VOICE OF THE CHINESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY VOL. 8, NO. 12 P.O.BOX 18603 HOUSTON, TEXAS 77223 DECEMBER 1983 The Christmas Gift By Rev. Coleman Chong Associate Pastor, Chinese Baptist Church Certain months remind us what time of year it is. November has Thanksgiving and now December tell us that Christmas is near. Tradition- ally after Thanksgiving, all the retail stores begin to advertise their Christ- mas sales. Lately I have noticed that the commercial promotion of Christ- mas has come as early as the end of October. This month, through com- mercials, reminds us that if we haven't gotten those Christmas gifts, then we need to do it right away. When we go to purchase a gift for someone, it is always done with great care and concern for the one for whom we are getting the present We think of what we may have gotten that person last year or what that person would like this year •December also reminds us that God gave us a precious gift With a great deal of c...

DECEMBER 1983 Two Students from China By Phil Montgomery They are like most students. They talk about home and about their work. They spend most of their spare moments at the university studying. But Yao and Deng live and study far away from home in a land most for- eign to them. They are both from the People's Republic of China, and are studying at the University of Houston as part of a U.S.—China exchange program of scholars and students. Deng Lezhi, from Hunan Province, is studying civil engineering. Yao Changliang, from Hupei Province, is studying chemistry. Deng said only four percent of the students who apply are accepted by the universities in China He said of those selected very few are chosen to be sent overseas For him, it was a great honor to be chosen to study in America Yao said technology, especially in computers, is much more advanced in the United States than in China. He said he can work on problems in days on a computer that would normally take weeks or months. Den...

At the counter behind David is a framed document from the Honorable Wil- liam P. Clements, Jr., 1982 Governor of Texas. The document commis- sions Marian Jue (Mrs. David) to the post of "Ambassador of Goodwill, under the laws of the State of Texas with all the rights and privileges and emolutions appertaining to said office." Beside this impressive document is framed a news article by Ann Cris- well, food editor of the Houston Chronicle, which relates that "all could take a tip from the Chinese where eating habits and methods of food preparation for centuries have been based on good nutrition, thrift and energy conservation when food is cut in small pieces as David Jue does at the China Garden."
