w m MIS. ill M Old Arab Tunes Are Sought Out THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 1973 THE RIO GRANDE HERALD PAGE 2C BEIRUT Bachir is musical detective — Mounir a 42-year-old whose specialty is investigating me- lodic mysteries thousands of years old. He tours towns and villages in the Arabian Peninsula on the lookout for long-neglected Arab tunes. Bachir eavesdrops on singing peasants, desert nomads, for- tune tellers, sidewalk peddlers and religious chanters for traces of the musical past. Bachir, who has a Ph.D. de- gree in folklore music from the University of Budapest, hopes to contribute to a "revival" of Arab music, mainly by "redis- covering" ancient melodies. "Arabian Nights tales are re- plete with stories of singers and musicians who could cause princes and caliphs to laugh or weep by means of well studied melodies. This music is lost, and it is our duty today to search for it," he says. Bachir charges that modern Arab melodies can hardly be regarded as authentic music. He sadly accuses Ar...

I s 1 I • Serving over 5000 readers over 55 years TPA Award Winning Newspaper Ten Cents Vol. XXXI No. 4 Thursday, April 12, 1973 Rio Grande City, Texas Pope-Gonzalez win election EDITORIAL... The beginning of the end... The bell is tolling for the New Party .... that frayed and dated political machine with the broken-back old mare as its symbol these days, born out of the ashes of World War n and evolving into a powerful juggernaut that crushed all opposition, one way or another, for most of its 25 years of power. Everything has a beginning and an end . . . Thank God for that. Mark it down and remember it well .... the 7th day of April in the year of our Lord 1973 .... for that was the day the sun came out to shine brightly as if to light the way for the many people who had long lived in the semi-dark- ness of political oppression; and that was the day when enough people realized that they actually were not afraid of the threat of the yoke and the whip; and that was also the day tha...

with tissa peterson Study Club- Woman's Club hold joint meeting to observe Federation Day... We have heard it said many times, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," but when the giving is to a cause such as the American Cancer Society, that which is given will help us all to receive better research centers to find causes and cures of can- cer; to receive better education of all people to encourage annual physical examinations; and to receive service to cancer victims and their families. It has been my pleasure this past week to collect for the American Cancer Society from many of the local business establishments. The cooperation of these businessmen and women was inspiring to me. Nobody needs to be persuaded to give to such a cause, for the neeil is known, and everyone wants to help meet that need. Rio Grande City High School students will join the drive in a House-to-House appeal this Thursday evening, and you will have an opportunity to join the fight against cancer. * * ...
