March 21 1996 The Brand Page 7 Rossen to run for city council seat By Kathy Muramoto staff writer At least one name will be familiar to most Hardin-Simmons students on the Abilene City Council ballot if John Wayne Rossen is successful. The sophomore his- tory major from HSU is trying to compete competing for the northside seat and plans to use his youthfullness and enthusiasm to his advantage. The council hopeful was thrown a curve ball Wednesday March 20 when he was informed that Abilene city charter states that in order to run for a council position candidates must be at least 21 yeas of age. Rossen is 20 years old. Ata press conference held the same day Rossen assured the group of his intention to continue with his campaign for city council. Rosscn's investigation uncovered the fact that Texas state law allows those 18 years of age and older to run for municipal positions. Rossen said that Abilene has "erected an additional wall of restriction to anyone wishing to seek a position...

Page 8 The Brand March 21 1996 A Cowboy Clash : By David W.White and Joy Evans Cdwboy Band invades France with a bit of Texas flavor Not since "A Yankee in King Arthur's Court" has there been a more stark con- trast than when the World Famous Cowboy Band strolled down the French Riviera. Pausing only briefly for "anima- tions'' the band made quite a splash or rather clash amid the shops and sidewalk cafes. The band began their nine-day tour on Feb. 22 in Nice France at the Carnival de Nice. The festival was held in the near- by village of Vidabaun and provided the band with more than a dozen opportunities to perform. The full compliment of band mem- bers and the six white horse riders minus their horses began the tour with a march down the sidewalks of the Riviera inter- spersed with short pauses to perform known as "animations." The white horse riders had to carry their flags without the help of thek mounts as it would have been too costly to transport the horses overseas. This ser...

The golf was rot much to write home about eacept that the course still had a lot of snow on it and there wasn't any grass on the greens making Abflene's Maxwell Municipal course look like the Bay HID Country dub. Not to mention the fact that I didn't break 90 in the two rounds I played. The snow was great on the slopes however and the trees were much much much closer this year than they ever were before. March 21 1996 The Brand Page n El Guapo has last word even with The Moose' in town EDITOR'S NOTE: Staff writer Ryan Shclton recently attended the Abilene Christian Schools banquet at the Abilene Convention Center to hear Darryl John- ston speak. This is his adaptation of the encounter. By Ryan Shelton staff writer I asked El Guapo to attend the Daryl Johnston dinner banquet with me before I had fully weighed the repercussions of his attendance. But he seemed like a logical choice at the time since an evening with "The Moose" is not exactly a romantic night on the town. Upon stepping into the banquet hall we immediately realized we were dining with the upper crust of Abilene. A poacher could find more fur in that room than on the Serengetti of Africa. Needless to say in our jeans and tennis shoes we were about as undepressed as Adam and Eve. El Guapo however was unperturbed. We were originally seated at the wrong table. When we were asked to move to the correct one El Guapo loudly as...

12 The Brand March 21 1996 Beach Reach 300 college students on fire for Christ take a unique mission trip to South Padre Island By Kathy Muramoto staff writer What do vans pancakes sun screen sand sculptures and God have in common? Put these things together with 300 college students on fire for Christ on a small island called South Padre and you have a unique mission trip known as Beach Reach. Twenty-four Abilene Beach Reachers plus one from Ft. Worth left the Hardin-Simmons University campus at 5:30 a.m. Saturday March 9 for the 11 hour drive to South Padre Island. Donuts and question- able McDonald's coffee soon cleared the travelers' heads and some of the more adventurous students discov- ered the CB radio. The trip went quickly ending at a small church in Port Isabel. Excitement was in the air as over 20 church vans from Texas Arizona Oklahoma and Wyoming loaded up their students after dinner and a short worship service and one by one crossed the causeway that con- nects South P...

TPIBIE Volume 83 Number 20 Abilene Texas March 28 1996 Serving Hardin-Simmons University Students Since 1916 2- MMME) Rosson looks to repeal City Council age law By Kathy Muramoto staff writer John Wayne Rosson a Hardin- Simmons University sophomore who planned on running for the northside seat on Abilenc's city council will continue campaigning but with a different pur- pose. "The campaign" Rosson said "now has nothing to do with me. The focus is the unjust counter-productive age restriction in the city of Abilene." Because of his age Rosson will not be able to run for city council but that is not stopping him from trying to change the city from his present position. Rosson is petitioning the Abilene City Council to call an election through which the city charter would be changed. The legislation that concerns Rosson is that which does not allow anyone under the age of 21 to run for municipal office. This law was established in 1976 when Abilene took advantage of the Texas state la...

Page 2 1 he Brand March 28 1996 Presaging a cine for students with a parking phobia Like a roving vulture I circled the parking lot for a full fifteen min- utes burning gas and patience. Finally I spotted my unwary prey climbing into his car and pulling out of his coveted spot. At the moment of truth I was poised with muscles tensed and engine revving ready to claim his spot as my own the second his front tires were clear when a newcomer entered the game. An unidentified vulture had entered my hunting grounds from the opposite direction and yanked his vehicle in front of me risking life and limb to defeat me and claim the prize spot. I squawked my disapproval out my window and shot the carrion fowl a bird of my own. After another ten minutes of circling the lot I finally found a spot a mere twenty minutes walking distance from my destina- tion. As I walked along cursing the ignorant designers of this school for their lack of foresight when judging the parking needs of students I wis...

Page 4 The Brand March 28 1996 Are college loans a ticking time bomb? By Colleen DeBaise College Fiets Service Mark S. Luce poetically describes his student loan as a "golden time bomb." "It's great to have the gold because it allows you to stay in school" explains the graduate student in American studies at the University of Kansas. "But eventually no matter how much you defer or forbear that bomb is going to go off." Like a growing number of graduate students who choose to finance the increasingly high cost of education case about $31000 worth. Even before he receives his diploma he will start shelling out roughly $400 each month to pay off the loans. He plans to do so each month for the next 10 years slowly chipping away at the $23000 in loans he borrowed for graduate school and the $7000 loan for his undergraduate education. "Frankly the situation scares the heck out of me" says Luce who hopes to get a teaching job. "I am talented I have a solid resume and have performed very we...

TME fflXXXVawiujoV aeaiJtJDFiA An April Fool's Day Tradition For More Than 50 Years If s a farce: Dam-It is dead By Potty Train a man about town It is Elvis all over again. Last year's report that Dam-It was alive and kicking is now being construed as a falsehood. "The dog is dead" said Cracker the Duck a frequent visitor of Dam-It's tomb- stone. "I've been king duck of this pond for more than forever it seems and the only dogs that I have seen don't resemble the honorable Dam-It "It is a disgrace for the likes of any four-legged creature to claim that they were Dam-It None of them I repeat none of them have the rock-carrying abili- ties of Old Fritz." Reports last year indicated that Dam-It had been living abroad some say Callahan County and then moved back to the Forty Acres area in 1995. It is true that no one has been able to find the burial sight of Dam-It though exca- vation attempts continue. An unsubstantiat- ed report has indicated that Fritz' true burial sight is the corne...

April 1 1996 The Bland Page 3 Branding: the future in fashion statements By Phil Moore-Space fashion critic Gcneration-X has long been searching for an identity of its own. In the process they have latched on to every type of body mutilation available. In an age of tatoos and tongue piercing the next fad out according to Rooling Stoned Magazine is branding. Branding a tradition brought to this country from the Far East is now the latest rage to hit college campuses across the nation. The exciting news is that Hardin- Simmons plans to stay on the cutting edge of fashion! Although HSU has put off getting e- mail updating computers in computer labs and purchasing books in the library that have a copy-write date after 1915 this is one time that the campus does not plan to be left behind. Starting April 18 at Western Heritage Day branding will be available at no charge to all willing participants. A dime a page will seem like a pittance compared to the new rate system to be installed. A new fee schedule announced this week will increase rates at the computer center drastically this semester. The rate hike is being blamed on the dramatic increase in the number of students who want to work on antiquated machines with obsolete software. "Ever since the student found out we've got the reliable old 386's in here with no more than Word Perfect it's been a mad house. We're constantly turning people away at the door" stated a computer center spokesperson. "We were taking a huge hit on paper at only ten cents a page. On the ream we were only getting $50." The revised rates will be posted at the entrance to the lab to try to ...
