NOTES FROM LILYDALE. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 7 March 1884

NOTES FROM LILYDALE. By A BILIoUS OoNT oniuotR. It is not very long ago msince Mr. Murray Smith gave a lecture on Richard C.,bbett to a Lilydale audience. M'r. Smith is now in Londoan U the Agent General for the Colony of Victoria, and, I.think, in a very fair way of soon be. coming a K.C.M.G. He is just the sort of man to work his way quietly up to a very lugh position. tUhamuming, quiet in hia mumners, gentlemanly, with abhility and learning, and last, though not least, a man of integrity, and the ineet instincts of honour. Sir George Verdon, the frst Victorian Agent.General, is a man that I admire muchly. Those who know perasonally Sir George and Mr. Murray Smith, will readily agree that in many points the two gentlemen are very much alike. They neither of them affect .colonial mannerisms, but have the habits of well.bred English gentlemen. Neither of them ever took pert in the unseemly parliamentary usqubbles that periodi. cally occur in the lower chamber. They are both men with...

Mining News. ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 7 March 1884

Mining News. ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION. Mr. Alfred Armstrong, Mining Sur .eyor and Regiscrr, reports as rollows for quarter ended, 31st December, 1883: The returns from 'qusrt in this divi aon are still small, in consequence of the principal milnng companies, vie., the Diamoond Creek, Baehanteo, Phonic, and One. Tree Hill, doing very little more than sinking their shafts deeper, and employing very few hands In old ground. The results fimn the Central Com pany, Reefton, 105os. 7dwt. of gold, were obtained during the quarter by four tributers only, and, as the tribute has been renewed, a larger party will in all probability be formed to work the mine for the future. A prospecting party is now sinking on the Yankee Jim's Creek, opposite the Central Mining Company's lease at Reefton. They have found a reef, but have not yet seen any gold in the :stone. The Yarra Company, Muddy Creek, will not. crush until the begin ning of the new year; they have opened up, and have 100 feet of backs ready ...
