Murrayville Mems. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 29 August 1917

Murrayville M~eas. A move of considerable mcment to an important institution is being put up. In common- with all other pro gressive centres, we have a literary and social institute, and also in com mon with a lot of other places, said institute has had to contend with a lot of anything willdo. iately there has been a reviva! of interest; a new committee has been formed and the display of energy is refreshing. One of the first efforts is to erdeavor to improve the surroundings. One fine method of doing this would be to fill in the front with sumething neat, if not ornate, and on the suggestion of the committee, the townspeople have eunusrasically isren up the Idea o: asking the council to alter its decision regarding the new shire offices at this ena. A petition in favor of having Lhe ufilea placed i iluunt o it:e hri has been signed by practical!y every ratepayer and resident of the town. It has a good deal to recommend it. Shire Elections BOTH COUNCILLORS WIN. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 29 August 1917

Shire Elections BOTH COUNCILLORS WIN. Considerable interest was shown in the contests in. Walpeup shire for seats at the council table. More particularly perhaps, was this the case in the East riding, where a ta.i of 537 effective votes were cast, thus showing the ratepayers to be taking an interest in their own - affairs. There were a few sang .xine ones who anticipated the de feat of the sitting member, but their Ilcpe3 were knocked out in the first xcund when the numbers came in from Galah. where the odds as s~hown by the voting was over 5 to 1, Walpenp was next to show, and here the majority grew, but the xatio was smaller. Then Boulka went napon the sitting member, as niso did Boorongie; Yellumjip said "8 to 1 no Henderson," while Ou yen more generously saved the new -man's deposit, while speaking with zmo uncertain voice. As the figures .ielow show, the decision of the xratepayers that Cr. Pickering had -pleased was most emphatic. Dame Rumor was busy with the 'West riding resu...

The ttten dance vwa fully up to the most san guine expectations, and everyvae present had e. most enjoyaole time. Mr. W. Manley cccupied the chair, and by hi taCct got over some fairly hard places. Owing to the present turmoil and the Gieelan election, there were no members of Parliament present, but the Executive of the Union was represented by Mr. A. M. Taylor, who mightily pleased with not only his fine exposition of the big trouble, the aims and position of the Union which wasi dinag himr honor, and Labor matters generally, but with just easily the best ex-posi tion of How fI'Dongall Topped The Score ever heard from the stage.
