PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1899.   GENERAL NEWS. As a reidlt of the interested labbrs I of several adherents of the Catholic c denomination, and as a consequence of the request-made to His Grace Arch. bishop Carr during his visit to Heales ville some time since in connection with the cohfirmation service-that a resideiit pastor should be appointed to this parish, members of the church will jiail with satisfaction the announce= merit that their prayer has been ac ceeded to, and that Father Gleeson, of Woodend, has beedn chosen as priest. The newly-appointed divine will con duct Mass in the local Catholic church on Sunday morning next at 1ii o'clock, Great credit is due to those who in terested themselves on this behalf, and the church is to be complimented up'bn having such devout workers. Of Father's Gleeson's ability as a priest we know little, but we extend to him - a cordial welcome to Healesville, and express the hope that during his so journ am...

TIT FOR TAT. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 1 December 1899

TIP TFOR TAT. A curious and original mode of re taliation is reported by a musical con temporary to have been adopted not very far from London. The members of a certain religious. community, having a small piece of vacant ground behind their place of worship, decided to erect an assembly room upon it, where they could give concerts and entertainments. It appears, however, that they made an encroachment, or arranged their buiiding so that it some what spoiled the property of one whose garden was adjoining. He, being a man of peace, first of all mildly called their attention to the fact. They did not even acknowledge receipt of his communication, butbuilt on. He wrote again; they covered the walls with a roof. Once more he sent an epistle; they painted and decorated their build ing. In due time they announced the date for the opening of their hall, and gathered together several choirs for a special commemorative concert. The offended gentleman, tinding neither courtesy nor redress, de...

If subscribers order the discontinu ance of their periodicals, the publisher may continue to send them until arrears are paid. 3. BEAUTY FADES. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 1 December 1899

BEAullTY FADES. The diseased and. disordered. con- t ditions which soonest mar, and most quickly efface beauty,,are those 'which affect colour. As the liver most of all has to do with purity of the blood stream, so the 'slightest de.rangement 1 of that great organ registers its. effects in the skin, and behold the flower of beauty fades. The only art that can restore natural colour and replace sallow skin by the flush of health, is the art by which the liver may be helped to sift out impuri ties from the circulation. This secret is an open one in the formula of Bile Beans for Biliouness. This great specific more quickly and naturally than any other preparation in the world, will rekindle the ruddy glow when yellow skin and liver spots have smothered beauty; and if Bile Beans could never be used for any other pur pose, this virtue alone would entitle them to any other simular preparation in the world. BILE BEA?S possess the peculiar properties of acting on the bowels without purging ...

The Guardian. PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1899. THE WAR. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 1 December 1899

U .ri @aatiYian. PUBLISHED FRIDAY MIORNINGS. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1899. THE WAR. O? curious feature about the Boer war is that several prominent English soldiers and civilians, who know South Africa and its people well, are sympa thisers with the Boers. All the world over, people are beginning to see that they are worthy foemen. The spots of treachery are not black enough to cover their record of undaunted cour age. Very likely the ignorance of the average Boer is great. But it is folly to class all as the scum of the earth. We are patriotic, and yet we claim to be tolerant enough to see some good in our opponents. In this case we ex press the hope that the war will come to a speedy end, and that at length the narrowness of the Boer will give way to an acknowledgment of Britain's power and magnanimity. No nation can so well afford to be generous as England can; no nation has less need of conquest for conquest's sake. At the present moment the British Em pire is fifty-three times the ...

GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 1 December 1899

GENERAL NEWS. Another step has been taken in the direction of providing better accommo dation at the local railway station. During the week two officers of the Railway Department visited Heales ville, with plans of the proposed new station buildings, but we learn that some slight alterations have to be made in them to suit the requirements of the position of the station ground, before they can be approved of. The need of better accommodation has been felt at the station for some time past, and the new buildings will be much appreciated by those who have busi ness with the department. A congregational meeting of the Piresbyterian Church was held on Tues day evening, in the church, the Rev. J.. Gibson, Moderator of the Presby tery of Melbouine North, occupying the chair. The business was re the amal gamation, and it was' decided to ask the Presbytery to allow them to "call" a minister to the charge. A casual visitor to a certain rural chapel on a recent Sunday heard a ser mon in which tile minister was re proving some of his congregation who had, to put it mildly, made a little mistake about the ownership of pro perty. lie said : " We read in the Bible, 'Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees.' But I say, ' Woe unto you who steal ; for it is eosier for a cow to climb up a tree backwards and hide her calf in a rook's nest than for a woman who steals her neighbour's hens or cabbage to enter into the Kingdom of iavan.' " An Irishman one day went to a chemist to get something to cure head ache. The druggist reached down a bottle of smelling salts, and asked Pat to take a good sniff at it. Pat did, but he stood there for a quarter of an hour speechless. When he recovered himself the druggist asked him if his headache was better. " Eg'orrn," said Pat, iL wasn't for me, it was for my wife."

UPPER YARRA V. MACCLESFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 1 December 1899

UPPER YARItA v. MACCLESFIELD. From our Upper Yarra Correspondent. A match between these two clubs was played on the ground of the former on Saturday last, and resulted in 4 win .forthe Yarra team by eight runs. For an exhibition of slow play, Macclesfield could not be beat. They took three and a half hours to compile 99 runs, and treated all bowling with the greatest respect and caution, with the exception of one over, off which they scored seven runs. The captain of the home team tried every man he had with the ball-(this must surely be a record, 11 bowlers in one innings) and to show how they bowled it is only necessary to say that they sent down 74 overs between them for 99 runs. The Yarra had four bowlers against them, who sent down 37 overs for 107 runs, made in one hour and thirty-five minutes.
