Stanley Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 7 March 1891

Stanley Notes. A telegram from the Treasur, now in Sydney, states that Stanley is excluded from the intercolonial mail service, on account of the exorbitant terms of the T.S.N. Co. who required an additional subsidy of £1000 per annumn for calling at the port. It is difficult, on commercial grounds, to account for the hostility that this company has at all times' shown to this port. One would think that an export trade of about 10,000 tons of produce annually in addition to imports and the intercolonial and coastal passenger traffic would be worth looking after. The Treasurer was doubtless justified in refusing to accede to such an extravagant demand, but if tenders were invited for a mail service to the three N.W. Coast ports, why was a tender accepted for two ports instead of calling for fresh tenders ! In spite of the   assurance given by the Ministers of Lands when here that whatever happened there should be no delay in going on with the Jetty works, the men are pai...

Mount Cleveland. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 11 March 1891

Mount Cleveland. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Mount Cleveland docs not appear very dis tant, looking at it from tho junction of the ronds at tho Whyte Bridge, but the ascent made by our party proved more difficult than . wo anticipated. Immediately on leaving the road we get into the horizontal scrub, which forms the undergrowth in tho Myrtle forest. After getting out of the river flats and up on to higher ground this gets a little thinner, so that travelling on our feet becomes possible Instead of crawling upon hands and knees. A good spur was now met with for nbout a mile, which brought us about 1200ft. above the river, but this spur terminates at the foot of a precipico some hundreds of feet in height. Several unsuccessful attempts were mado in different places to scan this by hanging on to roots and rocks. At last, by following the cliff round in a westerly direction, a small stream n-as found, up the bed of which a possible track was got leading us on to another spur that cont...

Wynyard Wotes.'.;;^ (FUOM OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT)..'
