BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY'S MEETING. A meeting to advocate the claims of this society was held in the Presbyte rian Church, Maflra, on Tuesday evening (the Rev. J. Hollis in the chair). There was a large attendance. The Chairman said, we were citizens of the grandest empire the sun ever shone on. When we looked at Great Britain and her dependancies, we beheld a dominion such as Cyrus, Alexander, or Napoleon would have been proud to rule. Her social and material prosperity was immense, espe. cially so during the present century; she stood foremost in intelligence, culture, and political liberty. Whence did all this spring 1 It was from her possession of the Bible-the word of God. This, like the philosopher's steno, had turned all to gold. We were much indebted to the Bible Society for the multiplication and translation of the sacred scriptures. It has rendered them in 250 different languages. An ancient life of St. Patrick, in Latin, has recently been brought to light in a manuscript in the Royal Library of Brussels, which formerly belonged to an Irish monastry at Wurzburg. Sydney is behind the times. This is the way, according to a local paper, they sweep the streets. One man makes heaps, another pats them up round, and a third pitches the stuff into the cart.
