THE VICTORIAN SECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 June 1914

THE VICTORIAN SECTION. Private advices from Victorian 'loyalists suggest the hatching- of another plot to overthrow the State Section. We are informed that it is being said, among other things, that the Federal Institute is not properly constituted and that its sections exist only in N.S.W. and Victoria. The first accusation can be dismissed as being, in legal phraseology, trivial and vexatious. In the latter rnsp :ill Stsitps tanvp ? sprtirms' with t1if» pvcpiil-inn nt South Australia, and one is in course of formation there. The knitting together of L.G. Engineers through out a vast continent cannot be done at once, especially when the sheep have to be separated from the goats. The process must be evolutionary if the completed work is to prove beneficial and enduring. The remarks of the- Federal President (/. M. Smail. M.Inst.C.E.) at the recent National Roads Congress may be opportunely published. He said:— 'The Victorian Section, of which, in the special circumstances, we are so...

The death of James Stuart, of the famous Stuart family of master builders, and until recently a member of the firm of Stuart Bros., occasioned heartfelt and/general regret throughout the building trade and the professions related thereto. He was a man practically in the prime of life, but he never seemed tp quite recover from a severe breakdown of some years ago as the result of continuous and strenuous application to work. Mr. Stuart came to Australia about 32 years ago from his native city — Aber- deen. All through life he was a man of unassuming manner. Great successes didn't spoil him, and he was equally esteemed for his qualities as a man as his great skill as a master builder. His name will live in the many fine buildings which stand to the credit of Stuart Bros., r.nd in the memory of a big circle of friends as well.

A ROADS "WORKING-BEE." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 June 1914

A ROADS 'WORKING-BEE.' Evidently feeling that it must shortly do some thing more than shout 'better roads'' and solicit subscriptions, the N.S.W. Good Roads Association has decided to organise 'a big working-bee.' The idea is to 'demonstrate what can be done in the 'way. of .putting one of the awful suburban roads in good order.' The Sydney newspaper which gives this information out to a breathless public, adds the somewhat facetious assurance that the chief value of the scheme will be its 'spectacular effect.'' Further down the column a well-meaning enthusiast says: 'We arc going to have lorries, motor-cars, drays and all the equipment we can get.'' POLITICAL PIFFLE. Actions Wanted—Not Words. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 June 1914

POLITICAL PIFFLE. Actions Wanted — Not Words. Mr. William Stuart s remarks at a recent meeting of the N.S.W. Master Builders' Association regard ing the failure of both Labor and Liberal politicians to take up the question of apprenticeship were opportune. A regrettable feature of present-day legislators is their hot-air tendencies and all-round insincerity. Perhaps the daily press is, in a mea sure, to blame for throwing its columns open to Ministerial musings and then failing to expose the emptiness of the statements. Actiner-Treasurer Hovle. of N.S.W.. recentlv com mented on the duty expected by the State of each and everyone of its employees. The Minister ex plained that wages had been increased by ^80,000 to £100,000, and the Government expected a fair return. If a man were not prepared to give that he should get out. The absurdity of appealing to the commercial morality of the men is at once apparent; But there would still be something in the Acting Treasurer's statement if he...
