Che motor Car J%» luteriftfiosa. Reciprocity . American Export Trade Suffers from Foreign Discrimination —Action Asked from „ Congress. 'New York Times'; — Discrimination in customs by many foreign countries is proving a serious hindrance to the growth of American, automobile export trade. To obviate this difficulty the Foreign Trade Committee, of which J. Wal ter Drake is chairman, of the Na tional Automobile Chamber of Com merce, has submitted a brief to the Ways and Means Committee of Con gress calling attention to the dis criminations by Great Britain and France and urging the remedy of reciprocity. For more than a year the National Chamber has been ad vocating that the duties imposed on motor vehicles imported to this country should be reduced from 45 to 30 per cent. 'Our general tariff,' says Mr. Drake in the brief, 'should provide for additional duties, determined by law or as deemed expedient, which may be imposed on products import ed into the United States from coun tries ...

Spring Breakages [Newspaper Article] — Mirror — 9 July 1921

Spriitf Breakages While cases of spring breakages are not so frequent as they used to be. no doubt owing to better ma terial and unproved design, yet they are likely to happen on bad road surfaces now so otten encoun tered. Experience leads one it»_ believe that the majority of springs break from neglect, although the immediate cause may be an exces sive sudden strain. The laminated spring, if unprotected, is subject to very trying conditions as to moist ure, dust, dirt and mud. The easy movement of the laminations upon each other is prevented, and the spring instead of flexing, breaks. In some cases rusting of the spring leaves has been anticipated, and the roughness set up between the laminations has been considered to have a good effect in setting up a species of damping of the spring, but this might better be done by some form of damper or shoqkab sorber. Lubrication of springs, while it increases their efficiency enormously, will certainly also pre vent many breakages by distur...
