The Western Star. ROMA, SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1876. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 13 May 1876

?H/je Ifetmi gfe. ROMA, SATURDAY, MAY 13,1876.' TlW Macalister has come back from his rest —which does not, however, seem to have teen all ! rest—to a succession of banquets and entertainments, which mil, no doubt, 'be agreeable to his self-complacency, whatever it may be as to his health- He tells us that the state of things at the Emigration Agency jus tified all that had been said of it, which was, we suppose, the,, reason why he accepted a dinner from Mi-.T) ainteee. He assured the hundred and twenty who sat down with him.. at Brisbane that the facts he had brought for "pose, at Glasgow—had been principally got from Pogh's Almanac: a source, we suppose, not availed of by whoever gave the Pi-oyost of Glasgow or Dr. Cumming the materials foe their iuther curious eulogies. And he tells us that there was great ignorance of Queens land in the old country, which is not at all singular, and which, individually, neither - himself nor anyone else could do much in the way of removing. LONG-DISTANCE PEDESTRiASISM. v- :fF!roi»,2te Field.} Nothing Is more oommonthan to hear opin ions expressed tothe effect that the recent per formances of Edward Payaon Weston, Tiowever marvellous they may be, are of no practical utility, .and, as our French neighbours would say, tfaboutisamt d -rein. For ourselves, we hare so hesitation ill at once avowing our con viction that the feats recently accomplished by tta/^wceiehrated pedestrian, who .has given ue a taete of the " fall walking" in whioh our Amwiiwi kinsmen excel,. are not less pregnant •with valuable instruction than the astonishing endurance and prowess In swimming exhibited a few mouths ago' by Captain Webb. In the able speech made recently by Mr. Gladstone, whenreturning thanks for the honour conferred upon him by the_Turner'e Company, he remarked ; that the rapid, and widely diffused accretion of wealth, ana the consequent growth of lenity and self-indulgence among all classes of our population, seemed to him the most-...

THE CHAMPION FOOT RACE. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 20 May 1876

f Itrc OFrAMPTOrt T?OOT RACrtt The special reporter of the Evening Mews supplies .the following account ot litis interesting event Robert Watson, of Scone, tlie Australian Cham* pion, ». Frank Hewitt, the English Champion, for £200 a side. This great match, which has caused taofe public interest than any ever contested in Australia, duly came off oft the West Maitlaud Racecourse ou Saturday last, the distance being 200 yards. -The race excited peculiar interest, from the fact that Hewitt had proved himself, both in England and Australia, the champion runner up to half a mile, and when Watson, whose performances are too w«!l known to require recapitulation here, challenged his late opponent, it was generaly looked upon as a national contest. Hewitt having proved himself to be without question the best man .in Australia, to say nothing of his home performances. For some time past Watson had been the:better favourite of the two ; bat that was easily to be accounted for as being an old ...
