GOOD CROWD AT LEAGUE'S OPENING WATKINS OUTSTANDING FOR WATTLES [Newspaper Article] — Western Star — 14 April 1949

GOOD CROWD AT LEAGUE'S OPENING WATKINS OUTSTANDING FOR WATTLES (By Jack Moynihau) DEFORE an estimated crowd of more than 400, three club matches in the knockont round were played on the "Rec" on Sunday at the official opening of the Rugby League season. In the main game, last year's premiers, Cities, played good football to "defeat the 1948 runners-up. Wattles by 8 points to 5. Opening at a crackling pace, the game, if it is a sample of what is to be played this year, augurs well for Koma's chances in the Baker Cup series. Although many of last year's stare have hung up their boots, youngsters breaking into big football - showed plenty of promise. Play in all three grades was always ul an interesting Htage, the only fault lying in the lack of condition of the players, to be expected at this stage in the season. Star of the main OitieB-Wattles match was Wattles' Dave Watkins. His marking, kicking and offensive play was excellent, and his de fence was particularly sound. Dave received...
