LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. TRAIN FARES. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 11 August 1917

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. TRAIN FARES. Sir,-Since the raising of the fares it is amusing to hear the absurd charges made against the Government. When the latter granted increased wages to their hands and those engaged in vari ous walks of life, they were metaphori eally patted on the back and told what fine fellows they were. Now that .the Government wants to get some of it back they are blackguarded, and the people of Preston even want MIr Membrey to re tire from the Cabinet if he cannot get the fares reduced. What logical reas oning! We must remember that we live in times when economy should be practised, and notwithstanding'the high wages that most people are now getting, how many are putting anything, by for the hard times to come ? Does the youth who swaggers into a first-class smnoker with a cigarette in his mouth do without .C · D - , I ,- . - a few smokes.- durilig the.. week, or the office girl, in receipt of a. good screw, go iwithout:l er:usual-. sweets or a season'. hat ?
