PITY THE CHILDLESS COUPLE [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 14 December 1960
PITY THE CHILDLESS COUPLE You know there is nothing sadder than the childless couple. It just breaks my heart to see them stretched out relaxing around swimming pools in Elorida or California, sitting all suntanned and miserable on the decks of their boats, or dashing off to Europe to 101 l on the Riviera like lonesome fools. It's an empty life, there's nothing but more money to spend, more time to enjoy and a whole lot less to worry about. The poor childless couple gets so selfish and wrapped up in themselves that you feel sorry for them. They don't fight over the children's discipline, they don't blame each other for the characteristics most nauseous in the child, and they miss a lot of fun by doing what they want, getting what they want, and liking each other. It's such a pathetic picture l Everyone should have children. No one should be allowed to escape the wonderful experiences attached to each stage of the development of the young. The happy memories of the baby days; the ale...

DELTA SIGMA DELTA WIVES' CLUB [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 14 December 1960
DELTA SIGMA DELTA WIVES' CLUB The Delta Sigma Delta Wives' Club held its "Scrapbook Party" on Thursday, December 1, 1960, at 415A Belvedere, San Francisco, at 7:30 p.m. The making of the scrapbooks is an annual philanthropic project and the books will be given to the Children's Ward at the U.C. Hospital for Christmas. The books are quite unique: The pages are of unbleached muslin; the edges are pinked. A decorative stitch is applied around the edge (via sewing machine) to prevent raveling, and finally the pictures pasted on. A final touch is added by the use of colored yarn. IPs fun, and a worthwhile project! Gay Blake, Publicity Chairman

DENTAL SCHOOL NEWS [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 14 December 1960
DENTAL SCHOOL NEWS TRAINING AND RESEARCH PROGRAM STRIVES TO BETTER EQUIP DENTAL SCHOOL INSTRUCTORS OF THE FUTURE As part of a national effort and with the use of Federal funds,a teacher training and research program has been undertaken here at the Medical Center. The goal of this program is to provide a more highly qualified Dental instructor by acquainting him with the principles of teaching (which is a profession in itself) and pure research. The program was begun in 1957, under the direction of Dr. Howard M. Myers, with the cooperation of Dean Stewart of the Graduate School. The tuition and stipend of those in the program are financed by way of a $90,000 a year renewable grant which is given the Dental School by the National Institute of Health. Requirements of the Training Program are rather noteworthy. First, the "student" must have his D.D.S. degree from an accredited Dental School and, secondly, he must work for his Ph.D. degree through one of several departments in the Gradu...

Abalone Found Without Holes in Shell [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 14 December 1960
Abalone Found Without Holes in Shell LA JOLLA. — Discovery of a highly abnormal abalone, one without holes in its shell, is reported in the current issue of The Veliger, a scientific journal devoted to the mollusks of the Pacific coast. What makes the creature worth writing about, according to David Leighton, the author, is lhat it is probably the only such abalone specimen found in which the absence of normal respiratory apertures cannot be traced to an accident during its early stages. This one is apparently a mutation, a creature that differs significantly from its kind, Leighton, a Marine Technician at the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, says. The abalone draws water in under its shell and expels it, laden with waste products, through the holes in the shell. Biologically speaking, it is a primitive creature. More complex mollusks lack such holes. The unique specimen is a small red abalone less than an inch long. It was found clinging to a kelp hol...
