IN DREAMS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

IN DREAMS . IN DREAMS I hear the melody of tones Whose pathos filled with such a holy joy . Not e'en the strains evoked by angel touch ; And breathing all the sympathy of heaven , To woo me towards the harpers from my dreams Could bear the music of that low , sweet voice . Dreaming , I gaze into those wondrous eyes That once sought mine with such a pure delight , Whose quick intelligence had told me oft That in my own a secret they had read ; Nor strove to hide their reciprocity , Whose beaming tenderness to me revealed The secret chambers of a willing heart , Inviting me to entgr and explore The untold depths of love s infinitudeSIGMA , 1874 .

SOCIAL ASPIRATIONS [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

SOCIAL ASPIRATIONS EVERYBODY has a part to play in society , whether the position be high or . low . And on each person alone depends this position in the social world ; for if he is poor , he must put forth the greatest effort to gain a higher seat ; and if he is rich , he must advance himself sufficiently to withstand the shocks of his own ranks . How inspiring it is to behold a young man who has climbed successively from the lowest ranks of society to the highest , who , with untiring energy and pride , has won for himself a degree of social splendor to be envied by his fellows . Here we first see him when but a poor , poverty-stricken lad , scorning the conditions in which he finds himself and making every attempt to gain a higher and more respectable position . Now he has barely gained a foothold , which with many struggles and clutchings he succeeds in retaining . His path up the hill is rocky and steep , but still he mounts very slowly until he has gained a position where he ...

POLITICAL DIFFERENCES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

POLITICAL DIFFERENCES . THE STATE of feeling now existing between the North i South has driven some people to the conclusion lately that we are now upon the verge of another war . The cause of this , it is claimed , is buried deep in the political differences which are at present agitating the country . The North and South , the East and West , are showing a firm determination to sustain the principles to which the ) are devoted ; and in the sustaining of those principles will not hesitate to take up arms against each other . The political horizon of the country may look gloomy ; the South may have feelings of bitterness against the North and the North against the South ; Democrat may have an ill will toward Republican and he in turn reciprocate the feeling ; but out of all this we certainly can predict no war . There is a bitterness between some sections ot our country , but that bitterness is rather the result than the cause of war . The worst of maladies comes on slowly . The can...

DETHRONEMENT OF JAMES II . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

DETHRONEMENT OF JAMES II . ( Concluded from last month . ) SECRETLY the king was preparing to send his wife and child to France . All the arrangements were soon made , and on Monday , December 20 th , the queen and the heir to the throne of England embarked at Gravesend . A yacht carried the young Pretender to the shores of sunny France . He was destined by a father's foolish act to over seventy years of sorrowful wanderings ; years which brought nothing but toil and vexation ; wanderings that gave him many a hope , but in the end only carried him farther from the wished-for throne . But James did not stop with having sent his wife and child from an imaginary danger . He quickly made ready for his own flight . At three o clock Tuesday morning , the twenty-first of December , the king arose from his couch , and left the palace by a secret passage , carrying the great seal with him . Once outside , attendants were in waiting and he was quickly conveyed to Millbank , where he crossed t...

EDUCATION AND ORIGINALITY OF CHARACTER . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

EDUCATION AND ORIGINALITY OF CHARACTER . NOTWITHSTANDING the enormous expenditures of money , the immense sacrifice of human lite , the dreary desolation of thousands upon thousands of peaceful homes by , and on account of the first Napoleon , it is still claimed by some , with show of reason , that his towering ambition and unscrupulous greed were real and true blessings for plundered Europe . The mighty clash of merciless arms , the dreadful shock of the demon-like onset , are said to have been necessary to burst asunder the bands and fetters which long usage had riveted and welded upon the people . Solidified customs could only be dissolved in human blood . The heavy framework of settled opinion and prejudice could only be broken by a mountain-load of misery and wretchedness . Fashion , habit , custom—what influence have these ! How they close the eyes and hedge in the understanding ! How they dwarf the feeble germination of original thought ! How they tie and bind the intellect ...

THE SUTRO TUNNEL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

THE SUTRO TUNNEL . THE GREATEST of great mining enterprises that have ever been undertaken and accomplished within the U . S . is that of the Sutro tunnel ; and a history or description of the same would not be complete without a short sketch of Mr . Sutro , who originated it . Adolph H . J . Sutro was born at Aix la Chapelle , in Rhenish Prussia , in 1830 . His father , who owned a large woolen factory , gave to his children very liberal advantages of education . Adolph , whose inclinations were in the direction of science and machinery , made good use of the opportunities offered him ; and at the age of seventeen , left the high school with a diploma entitling him to enter the Prussian military volunteer service without having further examinations . But to trace him through all European experiences would be too tedious in this place . In 1850 we find him in the city of New York . Upon deciding to seek his fortune in the west , he immediately sailed , via Panama , for San Francisco...

THE POET OF THE FUTURE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

THE POET OF THE FUTURE . WE OFTEN mourn the march of prosaic science . The beautiful myths of heroic ages vanish before its light , and all yields to the iron rule of law . The poet can no longer see among the shadows of the forest , the goddess Pan , nor any nymph . He can no longer hear the marching of the gods in the wind . Men fight no longer , favored by some deity ; but everywhere the light of science has dispelled the twilig ht in which men s fancies made fair pictures . While it is true that the fancy no longer roams where it will , but finds itself bound in by unyielding laws ; yet is the age of poetry gone by ? Because the nymph is gone , because the faun , man-ani-mal , has fled , has nature no longer a voice for the poet ? If she has lost her mystic forms , has she not given up the secret of her hidden life ; has she not gained a soul ? Nor is fancy the only field for the poet . While the poet of the past gave his time to heroic stories , he of the present sings the pass...

EXCHANGES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1879

EXCHANGES . The few hours that we spend each month among our exchanges ar pleasant hours indeed . Here lies before us the accumulation of two weeks . Look at them , of al sizes and shapes , plain , blue , red and green . As it is with al our friends , we can tel each one by its back . First comes the Wheaton Record , very neatly dressed indeed ; and having withal the appearance of one- who feels herself worthy of a place among the best , Atheism —some remarks against Bob Ingersoi , is a very good article withal ; but being a senior and wishing to try our logic , we tested a few points and found them logically wanting . There is one tiling that the Record lacks , and that is a local department . To tel the truth , theVolante has been improving . We were unfavorabl y impressed with the first numbers . There was in them a sense of senior superiority and of freshman s insigificance . This feeling seems to hav died out ; and we hav not red for some time the account of any meeting that ha...
