IAGRICULTURAL1 SCIENCE [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

IAGRICULTURAL1 \ SCIENCE THE GASOLINE ENGINE . As gasoline engines come more and more Into use as prime movers , their care and operation become better understood . Yet many users wonder why their engines fail ln power or even balk entirely . In this connection a few suggestions may be of Interest . If well cared for an engine will run for years . Use only the best gas engine oil in the cylinder ; any good machine oil will do for other parts . Take up all wear in bearings , If possible , but dont get them too tight as they are apt to heat . The gasoline mixture and electric ignition sometimes give trouble . To adjust mixture set the engine for full power , ho 4 d brake on fly wheel and open and close the miser-needle valve . The adjustment that gives the highest speed is the one desired . The brake should be held at a uniform pressure . If tne jump spark is used for ignition the timer and plug should be clean and all wire connections tight . Keep buzzer contacts smooth and adjust bu...

So long as the oil stays in , the roof is waterproof . If the oil evaporates , the roofing becomes brittle , cracks and lets the water in . This is why these pitches do not make good roofing . IIPOULTRY I [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

IIPOULTRY I A HOME-MADE BROODER . J . S . M ., of Canal Winchester , O ., wants to know how to make an outdoor brooder to accommodate 150 chicks . He says that he does not intend to put them In it as soon as they are hatched , but after they are three weeks old , and that up to that time he will use a factory-made brooder . My advice to J . S . M . is not to put that many chicks at any time into one brooder . 1 should expect a heavy death rate in any brood of that size confined in one brooder . Manufacturers of brooders advertise sizes that they claim will hold 100 chicks and even more than that . But I have never yet seen a 100-chick brooder that was large enough to trust 100 chickens in for more than a few days at the start . One of the first things to learn in the artificial rearing of chickens is to avoid crowding them . That is one of the very first lessons . Crowding and uncleanness have spoiled the hopes and calculations of more amateurs in poultry culture than any other two ...
