9 Was atwl Stttirfbw DRIVING A COW TO POUND BY THE AUTHOR OF . ?« . MILDRED S WEDDING , . , ; ; ; ETC . * . ; Did you : cver-drive a cow to pound ? No , of course not . Did your mother ever drive a cow to pound ? or your wife ? Of course not , again . ¦ Well , 1 have . I , Tabitha Treooodle , of Tregawk , spinster , drove a large brindled knot cow to pound . And since I am neither first cousin to Mrs . Squeamish , nor first toady to Mrs . Grundy , I see rib reason whatever why I should deny the fact . Perhaps up in England folks maynt know what a knot cow is , I have heard theres a great deal of ignorance in London ; and people at the West-end can scarcely tell a mayber from amugset . ( a ) Well , a knot cow is a cow without horns , having a little knot or knob on the head Instead of those appendages . If that brlndle had horns , I dont think—well , yes , Ill confess it—I dont think I should have driven her to a pound . I object to horns . They bave an ugly look ; and they give me a...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 8 August 1868

AGRICULTURAL .: EarnersProspects . - The year has now become far ehongh advanced to admit of an estimate being formed concerning the prospects of the farmer . The Spring in most parts of the West was cold , wet , and backward to such an . extent , that the usual Spring crops could not be got into the ground in proper time , except in soils that are naturally or artificially drained , and in places where Fall plowing of stubble ; and sod land had been practiced . Fall plowing has many recommendations , among the most prominent , are the following : The work can be done when horses and men can be best spared—the roots of weeds being reversed become decomposed and turned into manure , the water of rain and melting snow is carried off by the furrows—the soil being exposedito frosts and thaws becomes friable and in . fine condition for , the Spring crops . It is to be hoped that the experience of the past Spring will induce farmers to drain and fall plow their tillage land , operations w...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 8 August 1868

AGRICULTURAL Saltations aad Coadsnaatlrms Michigan Agricultural College .. I have just returned from a visit to the Michigan Agricultural College at Lansing . It is doing a great work , not only in educating the students , but in making experiments . Dr . Miles , the Professor of Agriculture was made for the position , and has accomplished wonders . The whole farm is admirably managed , and does great credit to the students , who perform nearly all the labor : During the morning they attend to their various studies . President Abbott took me into the rooms where they were reciting , and a finer set of young men I never saw together . Most of them are farmers sons . In the afternoon they put on a working suit , and for three hours are employed on the farm , or in the garden or tool-house . They are allowed from 6 c . to 7 l-2 c . per hour . -Some were , hoeing corn ; others pulling out stump s with a machine ; others were helping the sheep-shearers , tying up the wool , weighing the ...

A proper regulation , of tte diet in the treatment , of a great number ; of diseases is of great importance . In all diseases attended with much fever , the appetite is much impaired , and the animal is unable to eat the ordinary , allowance of food , and to eat food of the usual description . , The following rules may be laid down in regard to the general treatment of sick animals . They should be placed In a box-stall , or any well ventilated place . It is to be preferred to clothe the animal , and have htm in an airy , well ventilated place , rather than keep in a close place , where , though the . temperature is high , the atmosphere is impure . HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 8 August 1868

HORTICULTURAL The Cabbage Crop . There has been much difficulty In growing cabbages this year . The Spring was so backward that the plants which were raised in hot-beds conld not be set ont in proper time , and when they were set ont , the transition from the rich , warm soil of the bed to the cola ground was unfavorable to them and they remained for a long time without making much progress in growth . During the time that they were struggling for life , the flea-beetles attacked them in great numbers and cleaned them ont completely in some places . We have found that dusting the plants with plaster or wood-ashes , while the dew Is on , is a good remedy for these Insects , bnt nothing is more effectual in ridding the garden of these nuisances than a flock of small . chickens . The soil between the rows of cabbages should be kept free from weeds , and well pulverized to a considerable depth . Every farmer should have at least half an acre of Drum Head or Flat Dutch Cabbage for feed i...
