He writes : I have a partition fence through my corral , dividing the cattle from the horses , and an open shed in each side . A corncrib is at the partition fence . LIVE STOCK [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

LIVE STOCK ; AH AYRSHIRE CALF The photograph shows an Ayrshire calf bred at East Avon , New York . At the time the picture was taken , this bright , intelligent little calf was valued at $ 100 , and the owner was not looking for a purchaser . Its sire and dam both belonged to families well up in fashionable Ayrshire circles , with long lists of prizes to their credit . Ayrshires are especially valuable on broken or billy land . They are active foragers and are able to take care of themselves where a heavier animal would be handicapped . Ayrshires are a Scotch breed , their original home being in the hilly section , where nimbleness counted . Ayrshires are considered by breeders to rank with the best cows ever raised for cheese making . It is a valuable breed that is working well up to the front in the United States . Ayrshire milk is rec A HUNDKD . C-Ol . LAR AYRSHIRE CALF ommended by physicians for infants . It is not so rich as the milk of some ojher breeds and is said to contain ...

NOTES Cholera can be transmitted through the drinking water or soft feed . During the past year the government has brought 401 suits against the various railways for infringement of the 28-hour law limiting the time which a shipment of live stock may be kept in cars without unloading . At the Iowa Experiment Station work is being conducted in co-operation with the farmers to evolve a breed of American draft horses . Imported Clydesdales and Shire stallions with native mares are being used . The question is often asked , Is there any cure for a chicken-eating hog ? The best plan is to shut the culprit in a pen where the chickens cannot get in , and fatten and sell it . Hogs are not easily broken of a bad habit . Some very promising American horses are being produced by farmers working in co-operation with the Colorado Experiment Station . Last . year four Kentucky mares were added , which makes a total of sixty-three animals belonging to the state college Meat inspection by the gover...

THE FARMER'SFIRESIDE [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

THE FARMERSFIRESIDE THE GUI .
